I have spent a week reading the forums since I registered, and have been really impressed with the knowledge the members have shown on here ..

Alas ! I am NOT a coin collector, and I have a wee query to ask the experts on here ...

My Father in Law had a Tin full, of a mixture of coins, and 1 coin had me puzzled, It appears to be double headed, but very worn...

I wondered if anyone could shed some light on it ?

I scanned the coin but not sure if it is clear enough ...

Hello Terror!

It looks like 2 very worn Victorian silver coins (diameter will tell which denomination but probably sixpences) that will have been machined flat on the reverse (tails side) and joined together. If you check the rim you should see the join.

There is no chance of it being a mint error as these 2 obverses are 1887 at the latest for the first and 1893 at the earliest for the second.

The 2 portraits did appear together on an official 1897 diamond jubilee medal in silver, but this is clearly not one of those.

I did a quick measurement, and it appears to be 25mm diameter by 1mm thick, and I cant see any join !!!

If it were a sixpence it would have been roughly 20mm.

I have that very medal - in top condition of course. But, it's at least Crown sized not 25mm!! So though it looks like it, by the size, it can't be. And I'd echo the obvious question : how did it get so worn?

My theory is that it's a shilling with one side redone to look like a miniature version of the medal?

Now then Terror, em fae Dundee tae, but living in Munich Personally i think its the Jubilee Medal as John (argentumandcoins) said, just its worn to a disc.

Ah that explains it And might also explain the wear - perhaps someone in the late 19th/early 20th Century, a time when "a bob were reet proper money" decided to spend it and Mr Busy Shopkeeper never noticed it wasn't a proper shilling? Mebbe?

Usually unexpected wear like this is due to it having been kept in a purse or a pocket for an extended period of time with the rest of the loose change (and people used a lot more of it in those days). 10 years in those conditions doesn't do anything for the grade!
