Victorian Coronaion Token

Recommended Posts

Can't find anything about this 23mm coin.

I think it's a gambling token from Victoria's coronation but I thought it might be worth sticking here (40p in local Antiques shop)

Is it my imagination, or is she described as VICTORIA 1 ? (Which strictly speaking, she was, of course..)

Initially thought it was a funny scan and some of the letters were worn away, but inspecting it it is!

Strictly speaking it is true.

Perhaps at the time they thought that's what people would call her!

I'm afraid so. See, his dad's 1st in line, so I guess he is 2nd in line??, and his kid will be 3rd. Or maybe I've got it wrong and must kneel at the block with my neck bared.

What if for some reason it never makes it to the throne

Who would be next in line?

BIG EARS (charles (charles III?))

then william (william V?)

then his first son (or eldest daughter)

But then again, a monarch doesn't always use their christian name.

Edward VII was Albert Edward

George V was George Frederick Ernest Albert

Edward VIII was Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David

George VI was Albert Frederick Arthur George

Elizabeth II is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary

True. There aren't too many exceptions in my list. :D

However, I believe that a monarch can choose any name at all. Perhaps Charles will surprise us all and become King Kevin, or Brian or Wayne.

He is on record as saying that he wants to style himself George VII in honour of his grandfather.

That's odd. I could have sworn his grandfather was George VI :D

Have you seen their commemorative £5 yet?

When was the last decent design on a crown-sized coin? I'm struggling to think of any post-1977.

The only one I actually like is the 2008, Elizabeth I commemorative crown. The proof is particularly nice in my humble opinion. Agree pretty much about all the rest.

Yes, that's right. The uncirculated coin is quite nice, but the frosted proof is a lovely design. Compared to all the other tatt that has been produced over the years, it stands out. Some of the modern stuff is dire. For instance the 2003 Coronation Jubilee coin, which I think is awful.
