That's a 'how long is a piece of string?' question. No two coins are the same, some dates are more desirable than others and some denominations are more desirable than others. Coupled with the fact that not all desirable dates for one denomination are the same as those for a different denomination and you can easily see that there is no straightforward answer. The first thing you need to do is acquaint yourself with grades and grading. Get some experience in grading coins and see what they sell for when compared with references such as CCGB or Spink. ebay is not the best indicator of pricing because too many things sell for far more than they should and conversely so. In the case of pennies and farthings, 1849 is a good starting point, though you might take a while to get out of the blocks.

Obviously the price to buy for needs to be lower than a selling price, but things starting at an elevated price on ebay frequently don't sell because most buyers are greedy. They want everything for 99p and consequently most will disregard the £100 coin priced at £75 BIN because they live in hope that the seller will give up trying to realise a decent price and offer them the chance of a real steal rather than a bargain.

Collectors Coins Great Britain & Spink are the main reference for all UK coins....don't bother buying coins until you have these bad boys.

Predecimal produce CCGB and I would suggest you start with this (1797 - 2010).On the Predecimal main site Chris gives advice on key dates....don't expect to make money buying and selling on Ebay...it is hit and miss.

im not sure coin collecting ???? is about making a quick buck, although selling on ebay seems to work for some.

some of the dealers ive spoken to say they can have coins in stock for long periods of time before they sell.

i think if it were that easy.....we would all be at it.

some terms you need to know for when youre selling on ebay.

wow....megarare = used to describe a coin with a mintage of around 100 million

an extremely rare variety = the coin is sooo worn, no detail can be read.

never offered before at this price = i tried it last week, but didnt get what i wanted.

judge the grade from the photos = i know nothing about grading, or how to take sharp photos.

all in jest....... :D:D:D

Years is not uncommon on higher end stuff. You need a lot of capital and nerves of steel! Oh and an understanding spouse, bank manager etc

Drug dealing would show a quicker return although the results for failure are much worse :D

That is why I try to buy decent coins for selling on that wouldn't look out of place in the collection. If I don't sell them within a reasonable time frame, the temptation to incorporate them in the collection sometimes becomes too great to resist.

and the reason why i would fail miserably at being a coin dealer :D

i think its quite sad that people can see this as a way of making a quick buck or two :(

but then ive only to look at ebay.
