Harthacnut Penny

Recommended Posts

I have listed my Harthacnut penny on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290539735740

I have always thought this penny was Spink 1170, one of the Danish types, however another ebayer has emailed me the following:

Hello! I apology but I must correct You on the Item. This item is not a Harthacnut, it is a coin minted during struggles between Magnus the god and Sven Estridsen. The item is of course interesting but the price is considerabale lower than for a Harthacnut coin. Similar item went for 300 on spink auction Dec 2009. I had made an offer which in my opinion reflect the market price.

Can anyone confirm the above? I am inclined to believe it is still a Spink 1170 as I have had a few of these over time all bought and sold as Harthacnut.

Thanks

Mat

Not that my opinion's worth a can of beans, but it doesn't look too much like the 1170 picture in my copy of Spink ? (2004)

The lettering doesn't tie up to my eye, mind you, it then goes on to say Danish types of various designs, which means what exactly ?

An email to the British Museum perhaps ?

Im pretty sure that its one of the Danish types, there are 5 or 6 variations I think which were struck under Harthacnut, the one pictured as S.1170 is one of the rarer Danish types I believe.

Maybe I should clarify with the ebayer if he is saying that it is simply not a Harthacnut penny (which we already know) or whether its not one of the Danish types that were struck under Harthacnut.....

To be honest, given the subject matter, I'd be surprised if he was wrong.

If it was me, I'd de-list it and send a scan to the BM asking for clarification, they are pretty good at things like that (and it's free)

I didnt realise they BM would do that for me, I think I will do just that when I get round to it. Cheers 400.

I just hope he is not trying to catch me out, he told me it is only worth £300 and made me an offer of £400 which I declined, so he has come back and offered £550!

I have never had a problem, just play the idiot and say, I've got this, I think it's x, what do you think it is ?

I think if you tried it every week, you'd get a different response, but as I say, they've always been very helpfull to me.

Sounds like he is trying to pull a fast one, why not offer the £550 in the first place? You can also try the Fitzwilliam museum they also will offer advice/identification, and are generally very helpful (or so I have been told). :)
