I hope I'm not revealing any confidences here, but one of the regular members of the Reading coin club was grubbing around in his odds and ends bag (we've all got one) the other day and pulled out a well worn 1863 penny. A quick clean revealed the die number 5 (in the 'H' position).

Only the second known apparently...

The last one sold for £17,800 in 2008 and that was a worn coin and was sold by a small auctioneer "oop Norf".

Imagine selling it through a London auction house with publicity. :)

Oh drool, hopefully we can have a picture, and well done for the find, hopefully whoever has it will keep hold of it, if not, then i hope he gets a good price at auction. I hope he didn't collapse when he spotted it lol :)

Oh no Derek,

You mean there's an 1863H as well? :D:D:D

Congrats to whomever it may be.

Gouby's book on pennies 1860-1869 states that Heaton did produce lots of the pennies 1860-3 but no "H" on these.

He states that the 1863 with die numerals were probably Royal Mint strikings

Don't know, I'm only a new boy there. If he is, we'll no doubt find out (cue begging letters...)

What a fantastic find! Having found my 1922 rev 1927 and one or two other rarities in past searches, I too can vouch that these things really do happen if you are persistent enough!

yes, and if i can clean up the mess around the lettering of my 1694 farthing to see if it is indeed unbarred A's in britannia i know it has one, but if i can find out if the other is 100% then i will be in a similar boat :D

but yea these raritys do turn up, i always check the worn buns just in case there is a rare paring, a missing letter or extra letter or number

i got an 1879 narrow date off ebay for 1.99 (no one bidded on it O.o) and a similar situation with my 1875H 5H pennys for a few quid (3 1912h and 1 1918h in average, with the 1875H) surprised sometimes how this happens, both are obvious, and both were missed.

so expain thse bags, are they a random selection given out or what?

Well done. Presumably only in fair to fine, though ? Otherwise it would surely have been noticed.

Just a bag or box or whatever where you throw the coins you aren't immediately interested in.

I dont think there is many of us Reading-ites on here, but having been stood next to Derek when he was shown (no, its not mine :( ) the 5 is as clear as the nose on Victoria's face!

I was watching this and left a speculative $10 snipe. Could this be die number 1 ???

enlarging the seller's picture did not help.

1863.jpg

My snipe outbid before it was made

$32.45 for a crap 1863, I wonder....................

It would have been worth the relatively low cost just to see whether it was a die number, or just a blob. One of those things you need to see in hand to be reasonably sure.
