Lamination 1965 Halfpenny

I have heard of this happening but I was under the impression that the blanks for the bronze coins were solid! While sorting through some coins I found this and it seems that the surface is peeling off. There is a crack, hard to see on the photos, heading up torwards the ship. It is not a die crack but a crack in the surface of the coin. Why does this happen? How were the bronze blanks made? Anyone?

Lamination is usually due to a poor mix in the metal. It can happen to solid metal coins and not necessary only to plated coins.
