Winston Churchill 1965 crown/ E & P Crown 1972

Hi I know ordinarily the 1965 Churchill Crown and Elizabeth and Philip 1947-1972 crown are fairly common however I have come by these in two solid silver coin salvers. The trays weighing 78.9 and 79.8 in weigh and hallmarked solid silver.

The coins themselves look silver or is this unlikely? I believe the 1972 had a mintage of only 10000 in silver and I cannot find if the Churchill Crown was ever minted in silver. Of course they may only be coated in silver in the tray but they look like quality pieces. Any advice on these??

I cannot find other examples of these silver salvers on the net which makes me think they could be quite rare as uncirculated coins set in silver trays. The date letter is for 1972 ® and maker SPQR

Could someone advice what the coins are worth if in silver and have never been in monetary circulation? I read somewhere that a truly uncirculated Winston Churchill Crown is worth £10000 but that sounds like hot air to me!

Any advice please? Of course I know the silver has a high value as scrap but wonder if these would hold a premium for collectors and even worth carefully removing and selling as very nice uncirculated coins?

The tray will have much more value than the coin which will be a normal Cu-Ni type or at least in the case of the Churchill. The Silver Wedding might be silver, but assume not. It is unlikely that many coin collectors would be interested, and even if they were it would only be as a novelty. The coins themselves will be irrepairably damaged having been polished and in all probability soldered to the silverware.

Hi Russ,

firstly if these were made in 1972, nearly 40 years ago then the chances of them having been polished is quite high. They look very good and if they had been standing around for 40 years then I would expect them to be tarnished and they are not. secondly as you have already said there are no references to the Churchill crown being minted in silver so this is a Copper Nickel coin with very little value. I dont think the 1972 is silver either as the silver ones were Proof coins and this one just does not look to be a Proof so again probably CuNi. And lastly, if you try to remove these coins then I suspect they will sustain some type of damage further reducing the allready low collectors value. The plates are worth more untampered with. To find the silver value you will have to subtract the weight of the coins, Churchill 28.3g and 1972 also 29.3g. Hope that helps.

A truly uncirculated Churchill Crown is worth approx £1. Even the truly rare VIP proof would struggle to make four figures.
