Forna

1823 Farthing Georgius IIII

Recommended Posts

Good morning. I am a new member on this forum.

I started collecting UK farthing. This is my first one. What do you think about it? I am not very good at grading. I bought it because it has a great eye appeal, it shows traces of red. Thank you!

Welcome to the forum Forna

A sensible series to collect and a welcome departure from the 1d boys who thrust their wares upon us.

Your coin indeed has eye appeal and I would grade at NEF/EF.

The eye appeal is important to me...there are plenty of EF's without it. :)

George 1111 is also a fairly easy series to obtain...if you haven't already seen it try aboutfarthings which is an excellent resource run by one of this forums members (Colin)...he will probably snipe you on Ebay at some time...or I will.

Cracking start Forna. Wish I'd started with coins that good.

Look out for the 1823 with a Roman I instead of a 1 in the date...

What a great choice of denomination!! :D Nice farthing, and these very often seem to have the wear shown to the rim that is evident on yours even in uncirculated condition, but I would agree with Peter's assessment on this one, nice eye appeal ;)

My sniping is not as succesful of late, so someone else must be beating us both or you have started to win a few Peter!! :(

Thank you Peter! I spent some time on aboutfarthings.co.uk before buying this farthing. I spent about 55 euros for it. Maybe a little too much?

I don't buy many coins from Ebay, I prefer auctions or online shops. Good for me, I don't like to be sniped. :)

I'd rate that a clear EF with traces of lustre. Nice coin, and a fairly 'easy' series to start with. Good work!

I don't think you were too far out in terms of buying as a collector, maybe marginally over, but a coin with good eye appeal is always worth a bit more anyway and will always sell fairly easy ;)

I'd go with EF too. Perhaps a little too much paid but it's very easy on the eye. This coin more than any other shows that Britannia knows how to multi-task!

She's probably thinking "Shield, olive branch, trident, lion - no problem. Bring me a fish supper and watch what I can REALLY do" :D

Very nice coin! I agree about the eye appeal, great toning.

If you want to collect more of George IV, my bookmarks (for when I get round to collecting them, I only have 1825 and an 1822 so far...) are:

Ahhhh yes, thought i'd seen it before, from the Veilinghuis auction 6, lot 568, although they do state that the coin is UNC (SUP) and is obviously a lesser grade. I bought lot number 575. Do you have your coin yet? i'm still waiting on mine

Her vacant gaze would indicate she's probably watching Eastenders somewhere off-coin!

You are right: lot number 568. I graded it EF. But I'm not an expert. Your opinions are about the same on its grading.

I received it last Wednesday, the 18th. I paid via bank wire a week before.

I see, lot 575. The penny and the farthing seems in high conservation. I know nothing about fractional farthings.

I think that they should arrive in a couple of days. Does the mail system work well in the UK?

Good call, she's facing in the right direction. Presumably seated in Trafalgar Square with one of the lions ready to prod all those itinerant revellers skinny-dipping in the fountains.
