8 on 7 varity of the 1787 shilling?

Recommended Posts

This varity is not descriped in the study by Manville and Gaspar (BNJ vol. 74 2004) but is reported on both the with and without hearts main types of the 1787 shilling.

I have a shilling with a dot close to the top of the 8 (no hearts) however it could be anything unless someone can comfirm that it's the same die as the varity...

Would be nice if anyone could provide pictures of this varity :)

I'm not sure the dot is from an underlying 7. The top right side of the upper loop of the 8 has a couple of lines on it which would be in the correct position for an underlying 7, but the coin's grade would count against this or anything so obvious as the dot being part of an underlying digit. The 3 different 8/7s I sent you were all punched slightly low in relation to the 8 whereas this is positioned correctly relative to where the 8 is.
