Old Editions of Spink & Seaby

Recommended Posts

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help me collate a specific coin price in past editions of Spink (previously Seaby) ?

The coin is the 1887 gold Five Pound in grades F, VF, EF, Unc and Proof.

I've got the following years but if anyone has any missing years, it would be great if they could fill in the gaps.

1968 7th edition

1990 25th edition

2000 35th edition F £400, VF £500, EF £600, Unc £750, Proof £2250.

2003 38th edition

2005 40th edition

2006 41st edition

2008 43rd edition

2010 45th edition

All help will be hugely appreciated,

Thanks

1971 11th edition (presumably marketed as 1972 edition); VF-£90, EF-£125. No other prices given.

42nd edition (2007, published in 2006); F-£450, VF-£675, EF-£1100, FDC-£2750.

I may have others but they would take some looking out.

Would be interested to know your reasons for wanting this

I guess that 2007 EF £1100 should be Unc and the EF is missing ? Can you confirm please ?

There's no hurry but if the missing years were available it would be really good. Thanks.

The reason I'm doing this is only out of interest. I've got a receipt for £107 10s in 1965 paid by a bank to purchase this coin from Seaby.

When you look back at the price of gold it becomes interesting how the collector aspect has taken over from the gold value

Thanks everyone. That is all a lot of good information.

I'm now missing 2001, 2002 and most of the 60's and 70's. It would be good if I could just get a few of the very older ones. I think they started in 1962

I'll probably ask the question again in a few days to see if I can jog anyone with older copies.

Cheers

The only other price I can give you is from the 'Concise Catalogue of English Coins' by Seaby in 1965. The only grade quoted is VF and the price is £95.

Thanks everyone..... but keep going !!!

Has anyone got early copies of "Standard Catalogue of British Coins" ? I've got a copy of 1968 and starting to believe it might be worth something !!!!

Does anyone know, can I post a spreadsheet to demonstrate the figures I've collected and those I'm still looking for ?

Cheers

Just a bit confused here.... can you tell me what edition the 1980 figures come from?

I have 1972 being edition 12 and

I have 1989 being edition 24.

It appears there weren't publications every year.

Cheers

I wouldn't get too carried away on value. I was given my 1970 edition by a bookseller when I mentioned I could do with an old SCBC for cross referencing Seaby and Spink numbers.

1970 VF 85, EF 120

1987 VF 450, EF 700, Proof FDC 1650

1995 VF 400, EF 700, Proof FDC 2000

1966 (Fifth edition) : F £70 VF £95 EF £120

Proof not listed. For what it's worth, Seabys didn't list UNC prices for anything but George VI and Liz II until sometime in the 1990s.

No, Seabys wasn't strictly an annual until sometime in the ?1980s. I think the 1980 was Edition 17? (It's in my bedroom but I've only just come from there!) The edition I REALLY want is the one that marked the huge increase in prices between 1973 and 1975. But I've never seen one. In fact, I don't have any for the 1970s, though I do have the Coins & Medals 1970 annual (some zany prices in that!), the Coin Monthly blue pages for 1979, and Collectors Coins also for 1979.

The 1970 volume is given as the 9th edition, but the copyright date is 1969, so there could be a slight mismatch here as to whether we are talking cover date or copyright date, otherwise if 1970 was the 9th, then it would be difficult to reconcile 1972 with being the 12th.

Mine has 1980 on the binder and mentions 17th edition in the title although inside it says published annually 1962-1976. Volume 1 revised, 16th edition, 1978. 17th edition, 1980.
