20 Franc gold coin 1814

Thought I'd post this one up as I'm fairly unknowledgeable when it comes to French coins so any more info would be great.

I've found out its 20 Francs, .900 or 21ct , 6.45 grams, Louis XVIII Bust / Crowned Shield in Wreath and in good condition inclined to say EF what do you lot think? Here's the pics

Also got a interesting 1746 LIMA but thats for another post.

Well I've managed to find out it's got the Paris mint mark which is the A at 5 O'Clock on the reverse. Which is a shame as if it were a L it would be scarce and minted at the Bayonne mint. I found this info over at coinwiki.

That's nice isn't it. I don't see a problem with it being called EF. Get yourself a couple of Krause World coin books (20th and 19th century). They are usually pretty good to get a rough idea. I use my 2 a lot, and for pre 1800 I google!

Yeah I must admit I'm quite fond of this one. Thanks for the suggestion Chris. I've seen the 1801-1900 for £22.68+ £2.80 delivery and the 1901-2000 for £28.84 + £2.80 delivery on amazon(need to confirm they're the latest editions) I'm guessing I won't find them cheaper elsewhere or will I?

I wouldn't worry too much about the pricing so an older version would be OK.For bullion all price guides are out of date.

I have used the library in the past. :)

Google will almost always give you an answer and Ebay a value (you may need to pop over to the country in question and brush up on coin languages)Ebay USA is also very useful.

There are black market versions of Krause about on CD.

Best place to look for French stuff is cgb.fr - €350 - 20 Fr 1814 A

Thanks for the tips Peter, I won't worry so much about the latest edition in that case.
