can some one give me an idea how much my old 5 shilling piece is now?

It is a 1953 coin ( and pretty dirty)

This is an issue commemorating the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II. It shows the Queen herself on horseback with the usual, but extended legend around the outside. On the reverse it has four shields each with the national emblem of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which form a cross with a crown in the middle. It also has their national "plant" - the rose, the shamrock, the leek and the thistle.

Lots of these were minted, as with all commemorative pieces, but this one is worth more than some of the later issues. You say it is pretty dirty - if it is just surface dirt like mud etc, just run it under the tap for a few seconds, but don't use any cloths. This should take most of the dirt off it. However, if it is dirty, it can't be in that good a condition. If we grade it at about VF (very fine), I would place the value at about £2.

There are some also with an edge inscription error. If the inscription reads "*AND TRUST***UNTO YO" (no 'u'), then it will be worth around £20. The asterisks are meant to represent the dots found on the actual coin.

If you care to register and upload a picture, I can be more precise but if you don't, I hope this helps.
