Newbie question on annual mint figures

Hi

I'm a newbie to the forum and am looking for some help.

I've decided to collect silver threepence's and so far I've managed to collect one from each year between 1944 & 1889 except for 1923, 1924 & 1927.

What I would like to find out is how many of these were minted each year, as far back as possible.

I do not live in the UK so librairies are not a feasible proposition for me, if possible useful websites would be welcome.

When I feel the time is right I will move on to collecting other silver coins and would welcome recommendations.

I have purchased the majority of my coins through Ebay and would also welcome suggestions for other places to buy.

I was also wondering if there is a definitive standard for grading coins and where I could find this.

I am handicapped and bedridden so all of my work, buying, searching, investigating, etc, has to be web based, and it also means that I have to work to fairly tight budget, although I am trying not to let this affect the quality of the coins that I buy.

Hi jgw3d welcome to the forum.

Mintage figures are given in publications like Collectors' Coins GB (see above) but beware, these are simply the coins minted in that year, not coins which bear that year's date, and the two can be radically different.

Silver threepences aren't a bad denomination to start with as they are generally very reasonably priced and actually go back a fair way (at least to Elizabeth I), so best of luck with your collection.

For a good standardisation of UK grading, you need the book entitled 'The Standard Guide to Grading British Coins: Pre-decimal Issues (1797 to 1970)' by Derek Allen. Copies are currently available on Amazon for around £7.94.

I’m also collecting the silver 3d, but only circulation issues as opposed to Maundy Money. Here are a few points which may help you.

Maundy issues to 1927 were exactly the same as circulation issues, but to a higher standard of production - and they usually show little or no wear.

Commencing with the great recoinage of 1816, it appears that all issues were Maundy only until 1834 when they began to be struck for colonial use. From 1845 they came into use in Britain as well. There appear to have been none struck for circulation in 1847, 1848, 1852, 1869, 1923 and 1924. The year 1927 was the start of the “Acorn†type, but in that year only Proofs appeared so there were none for circulation and also none of the Acorn type were struck for 1929.

As you begin looking at catalogues, you will find the word “Maundy†applied to most pre-1816 issues, but I consider this is a misnomer. In early years, the Maundy ceremony was performed using only silver 1d coins, therefore any 2d, 3d and 4d of those times would have been for general circulation. I would very much like to know if anyone in this forum has attempted to make a split of which years were “Maundy only†or “circulation only†(or both) for pre-1816 so-called Maundy money.

Now, one thing is certain. If I have any of those facts wrong, we will get lots of replies to this topic!

Welcome to the forum.

This site produces an excellent yearly coin book which covers 1797-to date.(Collectors coins GB)

This includes mintages although note the earlier comments regarding actual nrs per date.

Excellent value and also available as Ebooks....and no I'm not on commission.

Ebay I'm sure is an excellent venue to cherry pick 3d's.I'm not aware of any dealers specialising in them and

their reletive values make them rare at auctions.

If you search "BNTA" members it will lead you to members and contact details.

There is also "online coins" which maybe worth a look.
