1861 penny small date

Hi, I need penny help again please!

I think I shall always need help on this subject until I get to grips with them....

I found this 1861 in a job lot, it is the first 1861 I have come across with a small high narrow date. Is this rare or is it just a coincidence that I have never had one before.

From the convex shield it must be Reverse G. The date numerals are interesting. The second 1 appears to be closer to the 6 than you see on many others. The size of the digits may appear a bit larger due to the disappearance of the linear circle. There's a lot of variation in the date in the first few years of buns. But, you never know!

I just sold a 1861, "Close 1" on eBay. The pic was too big to put on the Forum, and I could not load it. I got $23.00 for it.

Interesting that Michael Gouby makes no attempt to catalogue date spacing prior to 1866

Also, a feature of many examples of reverse G is that the date can be very weakly struck.

1866 seems to be the worst

Thanks for all your comments folks, very helpful in this area as always. Scott your '1' is much closer than mine, I have a couple like that, the one I have pictured where the '1' is the distance that it is is a first to me.

Probably because it is normal for 1860 - 1863 - there would be too many varieties to cope with.
