I'm afraid what you're looking at there is an example of the Great (<- irony) British Coin Redesign of 2008. This involved replacing the serviceable though hardly inspired designs from 1968-71 by throwing open a competition to redesign the coins to a group of 3-year-old kids living in an Essex postwar council estate. For some reason, a design that featured a single Royal Coat of Arms split over the reverses of all denominations which refused to make a coherent whole when assembled because the designer in question was too young to realise that coins by their nature are round and will not tessellate, won. We are doomed to live with these for the forseeable future, unlike the recipients of the Victorian Jubilee Head who only had 6 years to put up with that particular misfortune.

I have nothing but admiration for any survivors of WW2 (though let's not be so black and white - even among surviving soldiers some will be genuine heroes, others may have a sorrier or more mundane tale to tell.) They all deserve their pension, and the care of the State.

However, despite his no doubt creditable war service, no-one can sanely or reasonably compare the Duke of Edinburgh to any other war survivor. Has he ever had to worry about his financial situation? No. If he is ever ill, does he have to worry that he won't get the best private medicine that money can buy? No. Is he renowned as a man of moderate, sensitive and tolerant views, especially of certain foreign races? No.

So, if anyone takes the piss, it's not because of his war service but because of who he has been for the past 60 years. Even so, our remarks (above) were hardly on the level of Hogarth and Rawlinson, were they? No.

Not wishing to become embroiled, but my views on the DofE changed dramatically on seeing the BBC's Duke at 90 documentary earlier this year. A man with a great sense of humour, no discernible pomp or arrogance and very dismissive about his own role in any achievement that bears his name. A very tough childhood too. Well worth a watch.

A few years ago, my coin hobby led directly to finding out a little bit more about the characters emblazoned on our coinage, and before I knew it, I was piecing together the genealogical jigsaw that is the Royal House (n.b. not Houses!) of Europe. Eventually it became a database of more than 25,000 individuals, along with the biographical context that surrounds them.

That quadruple-barrelled surname I quoted a few posts back is accurate, give or take an umlaut, and, based on the measure of the proportion of God's blood running in his veins (and that really is how they work it out), Philip is more royal than the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas he married into. So was Diana, but that's another story (think Stuart).

You'd be surprised how many famous faces, that you thought were "commoners" are actually part of the network.
