Cartwheel snuffbox?

Recommended Posts

I have here a snuff box or "smuggler's twopence" that belongs to a friend who is interested in knowing anything of interest about it? What is it's value, and what would have this have been used for? I have tried researching this on the internet but have not found one quite similar. The grade is not too good, so I haven't though much of it in terms of value.

Great piece of creative Numsmatic history - A late 19th Cent VESTA special created for a mumismitist. Value what any crazy collector will pay. Maybe there is a silver watch fob to go with it?

Agree its a Vesta (match) case ,as its has a striker in the edge. So not a snuff box. I would have thought worth £50.00 on ebay if in both the Coin section and Vesta Case section on a good day. I had one , but about 40 years ago, so must be pretty rare to find, as cannot remember seeing another since then .

It's the kind of thing an antiques dealer would be much more help with. Numismatically, it's too 'altered' to be of interest to a coin collector, but one who was also interested in antiques and curios might find it irresistible. But even an antiques collector with little knowledge of coins might find it of great interest. Have you tried your local antiques dealers? (If it was 'just' a coin, in that grade it wouldn't be worth more than around £20 - £25).

As a 'coin' I'd have valued it more like a tenner, owing to grade (Vg)?... in any case, are there two of them stuck together?

Thanks for letting me know it was a vesta case for keeping matches, I will look into this.

Yes you're right. I was judging it only on the reverse which is passable. The obverse is pretty awful.
