1897 Rupee, really nice!

Recommended Posts

My friend also has this really lovely Half Rupee. Hard to find too much info on this either, but these are somewhat scarcer than the full Rupees. Any ideas as to grade, value etc??

It doesn't look like it has ever been cleaned and retains some original lustre, I am going to give it an XF! Coin of the British Raj, so therefore a British coin! ;)

Nice coin...I would go along with the US grading of XF (UK grade GVF to NEF).

I've seen many Rupee coins but as you say the half rupees appear scarcer.

I'm aware of many varieties of rupee which are collectable (specialists).Although I don't know of any Indian coin collectors on this forum.

I assume the half rupee is shilling size...I've got a few rupees which compared to UK florins can be picked up for a fraction of the cost.I would think the same half rupee/shilling ratio exists.

Looking at the picture again I would give it EF.

I'd also say EF with minimal wear on the REV. As to its value, i have no idea, it's not something i collect. Looks as though the OBV design looks similar to gothic florins though and a good indicator to wear would be Viccies braid which does'nt look worn at all to me

Yes, EF a bit soft in strike some rub to brow and rev. was commented on, but looks like some of original lustre still present in areas...

Not a clue otherwise about these Indian pieces; the coin does say "India" after all.

Astonishing that Victoria perpetuated that myth of youth in 1897, when she was a withered crone just 4 years from death! Still I suppose it was only 10 years earlier that Brits finally saw an end to the Young Head...
