Christ, i think they're being a bit harsh on this one, lot 1539 1934 Crown described as GF, if thats a good fine then i'm seriously needing my eyes tested, i'd have put this in the VF/GVF category at least

I absolutely agree with you. It's definitely undergraded.

This seems to be the policy of London Coins generally. It is all very well grading this harshly but it leaves huge chasms in the system and some grades become impossibly wide.

On the plus side, I suppose it is better than overgrading...

I think the grade may be a typo.Although Londoncoins/CGS are harsh on grading (as they had to be)with competion from ngc/pcgs etc moving strongly into Europe.I just bought 3 bun farthings (2 ngcms64's & a 65)...unc in anyones terms and spot on in my opinion.I would buy a lesser grade cgs say au78 and I'm sure there wouldn't be a lot of difference.

I would have thought that with PCGS and NGC moving into Europe that CGS would be less strict to attract more custom, not the other way round  But that 1934 Wreath crown is definately not GF, seriously, i don't think i'd ever submit a coin to CGS if thats how harsh they are. This is certainly a VF, any fool can see that.

I don't think its anything more complicated than somebody omitted to type the 'V' between 'G' and 'F', especialy when you look at the estimate, which is likely to be on the low side at £1750-£2500.

Do they really expect to shift 27 20p undated mules for a minimum of £40 each?!

CGS coins and NGC/PCGS coins are regarded highly for their harshness and rightly so reflects in their values compared to other TPG's if CGS had been weak they wouldn't of even got off the starting blocks.Over the years I've picked up on how I rate dealers grading(especially before the internet)I've got to a point where one's GEF is as good as anothers UNC.There is a certain long time dealer (near the front of coin news)who overgrades by at least 1 point....BU Gem and all that waffle.I bought another gf+ 1694 1/2d but it turned out to be poor/nearly fair...went straight back and haven't used since.

Well, this may represent (the Sale, that is) an opportunity for those that go. I have often found some esoteric bits of interest but not so in this case. Buon Chance to those bidding!

The other 1934 Crown they have as Prooflike AU obverse , is not a great deal better ,and GVF to AEF

would be its proper grade I would say. So grasding not very consistant ?

I have a question on Lot 1515, what exactly is that coin? I've seen several coins that look similar to it on eBay advertised as "Retro Crowns" and are obviously reproductions. So is this a real Royal Mint product? Is it a pattern coin? Or did a dealer just get stuck with a crap coin and decided that some fool and his money would be parted at auction?

Lots about the "Patina" coins on a google search.. Spink sold a vast number 11 July 2001

and someone who says they later asked Spinks for more details, say they said they couldn't

give any details and that they (Spinks) regretted ever getting themselves involved with them

Yes, steer clear of them unless you like the desings and at that pay not a lot above bullion for the silver and gold issues.

I must confess that in the original Patina Sale that I bought three of the gold pieces at 500 pounds each, but they have about 40gm. of gold each!!

I don't know. Not encountered such a crown before.

Intriguing though.

I've found one or two items but not enough to make it worth attending so will probably just submit a few e-mail bids, as previously.

Unfortunately Dave, they actually typed "Good Fine" and not GF or GVF, so perhaps this is actually their grade.

Also if i was a Halfcrown man i'd be going for lot 1711, there's actually a few nice HCs in there

Comparing it to my GVF and Derek's book I'd go VF and the observe is pretty badly banged up.
