Now that the year is drawing to a close I thought it might be an idea to ask “How many coins did you buy this year?†I did a quick reckoning up myself and was shocked to discover it was 87 for me! (I thought it might have been around 50 ) I know some of you buy coins to sell on so will have probably bought many more and some of you more discerning gentlemen may not have hit double figures?

I think that my new year’s resolution will have to be working towards reducing the number and increasing the prices!

82 for me this year, though in mitigation, 29 of those were the Olympic 50p set because they had 26 new designers. There were also another 2 pieces of modern decimal c**p for the attributed designers section, so only about 50 in reality.

And it looks like its getting a whole lot more expensive. As an example, I noticed today that Spink's top price for an 1827 penny in their 2011 catalogue was £2800 in EF with no price given for UNC. That left the price open to negotiation. In 2012, however, they have suddenly listed it in UNC at £12,500! Any seller will now be looking for that kind of figure!

An Unc 1827 1d will come onto the market so rarely why do Spink bother...it will go to the highest bidder who probably ignores Spink....it's nothing more than a guess...and uneducated one often IMO.

If we get collectors paying 000,s for variety washers because they appear in a reference book I shudder what they will pay for a ....1827.....proper coin.

If you won millions on a lottery and you wanted the best 1827 £100,000 would be chicken feed.

I think there are only two (2) 1827 Uncirculated Pennies known. One was sold 3 or 4 years ago by Colin Cooke, and it brought an astronomical price for the time! I can see why the price has been raised...it is a really RARE coin in better grades!

Well I had 1233 this time last year, and I have 1154 now. I have sold 703 this year, so that means I must have bought 624.

I too am concentrating on getting the overall numbers down and the average values up.

Average value per coin end 2010: £11.59

Average value per coin now: £18.05

Of course, being a date/variety collector, I still have all the cheap 20th century coins I bought early on, so it gets progressively harder to bring the average up.

That's the problem with having a specialist collection and few funds. I find myself less tempted by the run of the mill or scrappy rarities, but don't have deep enough pockets to upgrade everything I want to!
