I'm trying to put together a catalogue of pennies "30mm ish bronze coins of the world" - for my own amusement, though it may develop in future to a website or ebook.

Illustrations mainly from my own collection, but there are those elusive types that you can never find or are way out of my price range

Stuff from Auction sites such as Colin Cooke or Heritage are straight forward, i can include a link and if I were to ever publish I could seek permission to use their image

But what about Ebay items? who owns the images?

Thoughts welcome

If you do not have the sellers permission, I would think Ebay would just say no rather than try to deal with something which will not benefit them directly. Easiest way is to e-mail the seller and ask directly. I have done it a couple of times and they are generally positive responses/fascinated by the interest.

If you are looking for photos of any specific pennies then I could probably help. I have a large number of the Freeman series in EF or UNC and many others going back to 1797, all photographed.

In the UK the seller owns the copyright of the image afaik. Certainly not ebay. (In Germany at least, it's the photographer, which can cause problems if that's not the seller). While few people are likely to object, it's best to get permission if you're 'borrowing' images and essential to do so if you plan on publishing to avoid any potential problems.

Which is a bit hypocritical of me since I don't, however I reason I am only ever going to use the images for my own research or, if I'm discussing a coin with contacts and it would be a lot of hassle to have to be writing to ebayers all the time. But next to the coins I own and proof of ownership, the collection of pics I've gathered (with associated prices and info of where and when they were sold) is perhaps the most valuble to me. Much more than the books I own; though I'd miss them, the pics are an irreplacable research tool.

My problem to a T, I've been accumulating pickies of rare coins and patterns for some time, it's only now when I consider sharing my researches do I realise I don't know where a lot were copied from

Ta! yes I know some I have, have been sourced from here! smile.gif your 1922 penny for example is one I would like to use please

Others I need to redo are things like pennies from Cape of Good Hope, and some of the S.American patterns like this one

Maybe it would be easier if our forum leader had a copyright post/thread where all those who did not mind their pics being used could post a note to say this was ok and what conditions they impose on such ?. Would be easier than everyone having to make single requests and posts. But, I am only a peon.

That's fine David, use the 1922 by all means. Any other requests, just ask.

That would let ANY Tom, Dick and Harry use it without permission. Its ok a forum member asking and sending privately, but you could have a problem with unscruplious ebay sellers picking up rare coin pictures and using them to sell something the don't own, so personally i don't think thats such a good idea.

That happens already doesn't it. and I did say with "what conditions they impose on such". I personaly don't care who uses any pictures I post when I do, so they can use them freely as long as it is not for commercial useage regarding the sale of any other coin or implying it is their coin. If they wish to use it in a reference book or the likes they are writing feel free.

I don't seem to have said but you're welcome to use mine (although mostly UK). I have a large store of images so if there's something you want send me a p.m.

As far as e-bay is concerned, it's down to laboriously contacting the individuals I'm afraid. And don't bother with Spinks, they always say no.

There are many pictures 'Courtesy of Spink' on Tony Clayton's coin pictures website.

As i said, this is a project in infancy, so copyright is not really an issue yet, publishing is a remote goal.

I'm slowly working through scanning my entire collection, which although a "labour of love" can get pretty tedious, so I do it in small chunks.

And I'm also now realising just how crap some of my coins really are :(; but this is the purpose for now, to have a record of just what I have on my computer, and eventually iPad so when looking a stuff on Ebay etc, I can decide whether to add a new coin or upgrade a existing one.

Including copies of rare dies i don't currently possess allows me to help decide if what I think I'm bidding on is! Having known examples of both the 1903 and 1863 open 3s for direct comparison on screen has already paid dividends!

Watch this space!

Not forgetting I hope, that scans are also crap - great for detail but absolutely appalling for tone, lustre, or general eye appeal. If you judge your own coins from a scan, you will feel a big let-down.

You are right of course Peck! But I don't have the time or skill for photos of everything. Scanning does give detail, important if you are a variety freak like me, and for what I'm currently trying to achieve "warts and all" suits me. Now when it comes to selling .............

It sounds like your objectives are exactly the same as mine and it would be interesting to see the result. I do find that the ability to view my collection remotely is really useful. This is especially true when I want to bid or buy something and I'm not at home.

Looking forward to seeing your pennies!

You can actually upload your collection here. Don't forget there are member galleries, though I don't know how many people use them.
