Sorry Stuart, am not ignoring you but have just returned from a dramatic weekend at my cousins wedding in Basingstoke. My mother tripped and fell and we think broke her nose and we ended up call out an ambulance and spending some time at Newbury hospital. What is it about this weekend? - Have just read Peters post - must be some inauspicious date in the Feng Shui calander!

Anyway John seems to have quite a few engraved tokens on the Bay of late. Were these all from one collection John? Is the collector still alive?! Would love to make contact with someone who has been collecting engraved coins for many years.

Yes, all from one collection Debbie.

Sadly the gentleman died many years ago and his daughters (both elderly) have only now decided to sell on his exonumia collection.

His coins went 25 years ago to Spink and boy do I wish I had had the chance of buying that collection!

Most of the sales have/are going to the USA. I am in contact with one of the collectors (who has been collecting for many years) and will ask if he would like to correspond with you if you wish?

Hi Debbie

I hope your mum is OK

Sometimes things don't go as planned. My policy is enjoy and bugger tomorrow.I've just hand fed Jake with chicken breast, yorkshire pudding and mashed spuds...he is now on my feet. :) My mum is late 70's but we drag the old dragon out as much as possible...she breathes fire but still gives more than she takes. :)

Thanks guys. Mum is a bit worse for wear this morning and looks like she has done a few rounds with Mike Tyson, but other than that is OK. At least she is now at home where I can keep an eye on her.

Yes please John that would be great if you could ask. If he's willing I can PM you my email. Much apreshiated. D. :)

You know talking of script, I really like some of the old English fonts for example :blink:a picture here.

Sometimes however, they can be quite complicated and a little confusing. What do you think the letters are on the second coin?

Isn't it E R?

LOL.... I thought it was AB and then I thought it could be CALR. I've looked at it too much and I can't tell any more! :D

C R, I think.

I think definitely C or E, something with a curving left edge, at least! Let us know Debbie when an expert in calligraphy nails it for you!

My feeling is TA, LB. The first is a bit contrived, though the T is similar to the one The Telegraph newspaper uses, the engraver has had to stretch it to make an 'a' ..but the LB seems fairly clear to me.

I did a similar test when I was undergoing a psyche evaluation in the old days.

It looks like sex to me (I bet Peter sees the same).

I was never convicted of my swimming with Norfolk seals..I'm not a pervey.

Must go now to wax my dolphin....it is a bit too early for all this

You know I am beginning to see the virtues of Times New Roman...

Thanks for all your contributions chaps, you are right John it is a bit like one of those blobs of ink interpretation tests. Can't think of anything to say to Peter  If and when I do find out the actual letters I'll let you know who is the winner! :P

Oh I was only 1 letter out in alphabetical order, that surely is worth a silver medal

Well done on figuring it out ;)

Bizarre. Text-speak in the 1600s or is it modern?

Well Done Debbie!

And after that little challenge it should be no problem at all for you to convince my wife that all the time and effort I spend on coin related stuff is worthwhile and that a few more £,000 to spend on the things would be an entirely justified and welcome gift. Somehow she just doesn't see it ..!

It was engraved on an American 1870 dime Rob.

At least you are at home most of the time for this hobby - you could be out all day fishing or motor cycling and at least its not gambling!

Mmmm… perhaps you should commission a special love token for her Richard :D
