That is cheap. Mind you, an auction house can pretty much set its own BP according to what it thinks it can get away with. I'm surprised though - Croydon have been around quite a while, and are highly reputable, so you'd think they might have set it higher.

That is correct - just 5%. I have never attended an auction, but have put in quite a few absentee bids and have won a fair number of lots. They obviously manage to keep their costs down by being largely a family run firm and by not spending much time photographing lots.

In my opinion, their grading of lots is consistent, if perhaps just a tad optimistic - but offer a decent alternative to the larger London auction houses.

Did you make it Historic Coinage? Did you see the two Ed VI sixpences? They had been switched around in their sleeves, made me wonder whether this was done by an unscrupulous viewer (being as the viewing is so open, and trust-based). Great auction, very impressed, a very nice family spirit, couldn't have been a more pleasant team.

I made it but only looked at the Saxon and Plantagenet. I wasn't taken by those and so didn't bid. A nice atmosphere, as you say!

Yes, I would be disappointed to hear it was common place, it would be so easy to switch for better grades, or better lustre, etc. I bought quite a few lots, and would never be able to put my hand on my heart and say 100% that the coin I got was the original one I looked at 2 hour's previously! Not after viewing a few hundred for the very first time on the day.

Well I got my two lots, one at my max bid and the other at £5 over estimate. The first lot was maundy coins so they should be UNC but the other lot of sixpences are described as generaly EF or better. Will be interesting to see what turns up. Hopefully a couple of upgrades amongst them.

However, I'm undertaking a re-look at all my 20thC material and am upgrading where necessary, so the 1950 and 51 pennies that I picked up have nicely ungraded the GVF ones I already had. I'm not too disappointed, although I would have liked to fill some of the gaps in my early 18thC silver. Oh well, Lockdales at the weekend I guess and online bidding, which I quite like.

I attendeed as always (one of the few salerooms within relatively easy striking distance for me).

Bidding was the usual bloodbath but I managed to pick up 12 lots.

I was underbidder on your 1662 Crown, it went in the room. The engraving kind of killed it but I thought it was worth a punt as it was the rarer inverted die axis type (en medaille rather than coin alignment).
