Hi.

Please can somebody post a close-up image of the overdate if they have an example.

Thanks.

Rob, There is no picture with it, but there is a 1893/2 for sale at:

Boulborn Collections LTD

Jan issue of Coin News, page 34

Cost 1,995 Pounds

Is that a fair price? He would probably send you a close up pic, if he thought your were interested in the coin!

Just received an EF 1893 penny and under a glass it seems to have a slightly odd spur off the centre bar of the '3' plus a small area of metal under the upper loop of the '3'. I'm thinking this might be a 1893/2 and in order to try and decide, I wonder if anybody has yet obtained a decent close up of the overdate. Michael Gouby doesn't have one on his site and the London Coins photos aren't enlargeable enough in order to be sure.

Hi Dave, that sounds like the one! Well done. Here's mine:

Here is a closeup of the 93 over 92.

Almost want to say it looks like an underlying counter-clockwise "3" - at least that might also be a possibility despite lack of changes beneath lowest arc of the upper 3.

One thing is for sure, there's certainly more than the 7 Michael Gouby thinks there is

There is a definate (although faint) change in the upper arc of the 3, but the pic does not show it very well. This overdate is one that you really "want" to see, rather than it being one that stands out with the naked eye.

Whenever anyone advises Michael they have a additional copy of a item he has listed, he updates the count on the Master Copy Book that he keeps. The number he shows in his book is only the ones he has verified at the time of printing. When I visited him in September, I showed him a couple of coins that he updated in his book, at that time.

From your picture Bob i can also see the faint outline of the 2 when i enlarge your picture with the ipad. From the spur from the middle bar i Fans we the faint line running down towards the bottom of the 3

I've tried to take an angled pic of mine, in case this helps:

That is a nice one Steve. Did you buy it as a 93/2 or as a regular 1893? Better coins like your example show a lot more detail in the overdate. Good find!

Mmmm, that's very clear. My coin shows a shorter more blunt spur off the middle bar, but definitely a spur. And it has a very clear bulge under the upper loop of the '3'. I'm inclined towards it being the real deal, but still not 100%. Will have to try out the new camera and let you all see what you think.

I did buy the coin as an overdate Bob. As I recall, Rob had a very nice one for sale at one time too. He may still have photos?

Dave, did you see my post about 1904 pennies in the 'Confirmed unlisted varieties' sub-forum? I'd be interested to get your input on these.

I did, but the photos I took were crap. Far too grainy and contrasted, so I binned them. However hard I try, I can't seem to get reproducibly good images. :(

Nothing wrong with the coin though. :)

Those above were taken with a cheap compact camera (£75 ish), a mini tripod (£15 ish) and 3 desk lamps from Homebase which I fitted with LED lamps (£13 each plus £5 each for the lamps). Nothing fancy. And I've reduced the resolution by a significant factor to be able to post them on here.

This is the rather unclear detail from one that I had a year or two back. I have been advised by people that should know, that these should now be bought with extreme caution as they are way more common than was originally thought.

That makes complete sense. With dies already in preparation for 1894 issues, why would they go to the expense and trouble of recutting an 1892 punch just to press a few pennies?

That's an example too, Derek. I think you're right about them being reasonably common.
