Presentation/Help

Hi,

I´m Luis (Caetobriga)from Portugal. I don´t know if this is the right place do do this but I cannot find a presentation area. I have started a british coin collection since 1900 mainly because of pre-decimal coins that I find very beautiful. My question is related with a good catalog for british coins. I have bought Spink´s catalog 2012. Is it a good one? Another question is about the method of this catalog becuase ypu only have a reference despite the dates. Here in Portugal for our coins we have a reference for each one of them, there is a group for ex: 5 and every date has a reference ex: 5.1, 5.2 etc. With this Spink catalog its a reference for the entire group. Is there any subdivision for the different dates. Sorry to bother you with these basic questions.

Luis Gomes.

Hi Luis

Welcome to the forum.Spink gives every coin a reference.

You might find Collectors Coins Great Britain useful on sale on this site for a few £.This covers coins from 1797 to date.It also gives the ESC,Freeman or Peck reference for the coins and lots of snippits of information.

I have to give it a better look. With portuguese I don´t have a problem but with these I´m just a beginner. There will be lots of stupid questions I´m afraid.

Regards.

The above link will direct you too a visual on what the "Collector's Coin GB" looks like inside, so you can make a better judgement on if it is what you are looking for. I use it all the time as a ready reference, and I think you will like it also. It is sold thru this site.

But for the portuguese coins there is a sort of bible(commonly called after the name of the author Alberto Gomes or just A.G.) that we use, the rest are pocket books mainly as a price guide. In England do you have a book like that to use has a reference or each collector uses a different guide to catalog is collection. If so wich is the most used by the majority of the U.K. collectors.

The problem is that there is no one reference book that covers all (or even most) of the monarchs, denominations, varieties etc which is why most people use a combination of Spink, ESC and Davies for silver coins and Peck, Freeman, Gouby, North etc for copper/bronze coins. If I were only allowed one book, I think I would probably choose Spink.

I was afraid of that but ok I will manage with Spink for the time being. Here we also have that for medieval copper coins that the A.G doesn´t cover as well. Now I get the picture, it´s time to get more and more information.

Regards.

Brilliant. All those who don't believe in spending money on books take note.

I presume the problem is the same in Portugal as it is here. No book covers everything, and even within a specialist book there are things missing. That's why you need so many reference books to cover all the gaps.

To many books weary.

There are many expert in this forum in their own field most have website, others writers and author, from time to time new discovery is listed in CCGB.

Just a comment they can rewrite or make a new reference book if they choose.

Yes it´s the same but we have the mutual support in 2 forum´s like this one. There is always an expert that can help you in a particular area. Another thing is that someone that finds any information in the internet or in is own investigations automatically shares with the rest.

Hi Caetobriga,

A completely different issue, but I wondered if you wouldn't mind giving a little information about a Portuguese coin I have. It's copper, 25mm in diameter, is dated 1753 and has IOSEPHUS on the obverse. It's quite thin and has a crowned V on the obverse.Condition is GF, but it does have a slight crease. Tell me something about it, preferably that it's mega-rare and worth at least a new Aston Martin. LOL.

Luis Gomes.

You're quite right. Spink classify by TYPE not by DATE. Each reference number relates to a particular type, and minor varieties come within that reference. Major or more distinct varieties get their own reference number.

However, Spink list values for all dates.

Spink's catalogue is probably regarded as the definitive book by dealers and collectors alike, but there are many other specialised books (e.g. Peck, Freeman, ESC, Davies) which go into much more detail than Spink.

5 Reis from Brazil under Portugal. Worth not much in that state alas!

Thank you for this - looks like it's just a toy model Aston then. :P

If you don´t want it I can give you my adress :D . Seriously if you try auctions like ebay you might find portuguese/brasilian buyers because of the visibility.

Regards.
