Who do you buy from

Recommended Posts

The next personal and slightly intrusive question is who do you buy your coins from. As a relative beginner I am always nervous of making a mistake so I avoid eBay where knowledge is power. I have bought most of my coins from reputable dealers except for the low grade bargain buys. It would be helpful if you could list a few dealers that your happy to recommend and perhaps some eBay accounts that you've had good dealings with.

In the past my main dealer of choice who has always been very helpful to me was KB Coins.

I find him a bit steep.

Go to BNTA'S web site and look in the members section. You won't go wrong with anyone there.

I have a few other favourites both home and abroad but its taken years to dig out the wheat from the chaff.

What about the dealers on this site?Red,Rob,John.

The back of coin news gives loads more options.

I keep harking back to fairs but when I constantly bought from the same dealers...it clicked.

i really don't tend to buy from one dealer, it depends on what coins are for sale and who is selling them at the time, if i had to pick one dealer out as a favourite it would be chris rudd, due to my love of celtic coins, and another dealer i tend to buy a few from is cgb in paris. but i don't have one that i use more than others.

I've bought from Keith a while back, but he's not that near to me and as his lists aren't (weren't?) illustrated and I need more information than SHILLING 1631-2 BUST WITH MORE ARMOUR VISIBLE REV WITH OVAL SHIELD MM ROSE s2783 NEF to tell me if a coin is a particular variety I want or not.

So I stick to dealers that have sites, apart from Mark Rassmussen who still kindly sends me his list and a couple of overseas auction houses that do likewise.

As I said elsewhere, I have over 50 dealers bookmarked and a regular schedule for checking those most likely to stock what I'm interested in. But really it depends on the type of coins you're interested in. My bookmarks are all geared to hammered Stuart coins and many wouldn't be much use to someone collecting, say farthings.

Rich I think you are slowly getting attracted to farthings, you keep mentioning them in your posts ;)

I have found Mark to be very helpful and knowledgeable. Many of his coins aren't photographed but his grading is generally conservative and he is happy to show you coins by appointment.

Me too, Mark is an honest dealer in both his grading and prices, he has always found time for me.

A few dealers are like this, while others serve your collecting needs with no thrills, but then like every thing else in life there are dealers who really don't give a !!!!

I also use ebay at times....but thats a minefield!!

Mine's a simple philosophy for buying. Putting it very flippantly, I'll buy from anybody who has a coin I want, in an acceptable condition and at the right price!
