George II Sixpences

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've not posted for a while but I've purchased a couple of coins recently and am trying to sort my catalogue out so I need some help :)

I have a couple of George II sixpences which I'm finding hard to grade as the Rotographic book doesn't go back that far!

Here is the OBV:

and the REV:

Can anyone give me a rough grade for them?

TIA

There's not a vast difference between them. The LIMA coin has a bit more wear on the obverse, but it's only a small difference (the face is just slightly less detailed, as is the wreath and wig). I would rate both obverses as between F and VF. The 1757 is nearer to VF I'd say.

The reverses tell a different story. Here the LIMA coin is much better, and is - again - between F and VF. However, the 1757 has quite a lot of wear and would only just rate F in my opinion.

Despite its dull appearance and more common status, the LIMA coin is the one I'd rather have, as the reverse of the 1757 lets it down.

Thanks for that, Peckris. I was thinking that it was all a bit shy of VF myself but I wasn't at all sure. At least it shows I wasn't way off the mark :)

You're welcome. Let's hope that Derek (RedRiley) drops by as he wrote the book on the subject (1797 on).

Better late than never. I would give the 1746 an overall NVF and the 1757 F based largely on a less than perfect reverse.

I like the silver grey tone of the Lima. The 1757 looks like it may have been cleaned at some time.
