UK Coins - bargains?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Totally new to this board - but not all that new to collecting - although I am just returning after a few years of being away.

I wonder what you guys think of these for coin prices - which I am able to get from a friend: All these are silver shillings - do they seem reasonable prices to you?

1826 F £1.80 / 1834 F £4.70 / 1834 AF £2.70 / 1888 AEF £12.00

1899 VF £5.00 / 1900 VF £4.90 / 1902 AF £2.20 /1902 VG £1.45

/ 1907 VG £1.45

I also am interesting in buying the following all in BU condition:

halfcrowns - 1944, £6.50 1945, £4.75 1946, £5.75

Would be interesting in know if you think they value of these are any good!

Looking up my old price lists - its hard to know with the price of silver up!

Thanks

Oh and an 1849 Florin in EF - for £66

As long as they are accuratley grading they aren't a bad buy.But at the higher end of pricing books.

The below F 1/- are only worth melt (about £1.75 each)

Your friend would be lucky to match these prices on Ebay and he has no fees to pay.

If you could post a few pictures of the F+ coins it would help.

Those are fair prices IF (as Peter says) the grades are accurate. However, if you used to collect then you're presumably not a newbie at grading and can judge this for yourself. Grades are certainly no stricter - if anything, a bit less so - than they were some years ago.

However, I'd take the BU George VI halfcrown prices with a pinch of salt. From 1944 - 1946 these are very common even in BU state, and I'd look to get them for less than £5 if possible; those would be good prices only for really superb BU specimens. In fact every denomination from halfcrown to sixpence is equally common in high grade for those dates. Probably due to hoarding when silver coins were replaced with CuNi in 1947.
