ID please; Elizabeth I coin

I've been lurking here for a number of years (what? since 2005 !). Recently got a microscope camera that can take decent pictures, and figured it's time to find out what some of my British coins are (I collect Canadian coins but like having some real old ones from the motherland). I have 15 hammered, and about 85 others, all pre-1850. Most are identified, but I would like more info for the hammered ones, any listing #'s if possible. A bunch of the others have errors, but again, I have no info about what is listed or not (catalogues too expensive for the small quantity I have), so I was hoping that you can help me out. I can provide close-up photos if needed.

I'll list only 1 or 2 a day so I won't hijack the forum and drive you all crazy.

Some of the hammered ones are in lousy condition (please don't laugh too much), but any info would be appreciated. First one is a Queen Elizabeth I - 25/26 mm. diameter, 2.79 gms.

It's a sixpence, but unless you can read the date or identify the mark that's it. On the assumption the last datal figure is a 6, the mark for 1566 would be either a lion or a portcullis, 1576 an eglantine (5 petal flower), 1586 is a scallop and 1596 a key. Disregard the last one as the obverse is clearly not a key, as rubbed as it is. I'd say it is probably a portcullis from what I can see.

I'm afraid the bust cannot be identified or the date.

All I can advise you is that it is a 6D and will be dated between 1561 and 1600.

Can someone point me to photos of the different mintmarks on Elizabeth I coins ?

I won't bore you with photos of two other very worn ones, just ask which denominations they are;

a) 1575 - 24.5/25.5 mm., 2.45 gms.

no date visible - 23mm., 1.75 gms.

The 1st coin is a 6D

The 2nd coin is a Groat.

Here's the last of my inquiries on my Eliz.I coins. Have a bunch of earlier Edward ??? which I'll post in a new thread later.

This one is 18/20 mm., and weighs 1.35 gms. At least you can see the bust on this one ! I think it's 1575 but it looks very strange. Mint Mark ?

Would still like to have photos of all the different mint marks.

I think you'll find this is a threepence with the eglantine 1577/5

The marks vary in style depending on the size of the punch, though are reasonably consistent for a given size. Bear in mind that they were all individually engraved in the first place, so there is no mass produced consistency. Mint marks are usually referred to using the old Seaby references, so get yourself a copy of Spink's coins of England where there is a page dedicated to them. An old one would do just as well as the list hasn't changed for years, though some were added later. The numbering system will be incomprehensible as some of the marks are not in chronological order.
