The end of the Penny

Recommended Posts

What is your take on this?

Do we need the Penny?

My own opinion would be just to stop minting them and leave the ones in circulation as legal tender. They will just phase out naturally.

The penny died in my opinion after decimalisation. :(

I put all my change 1p's,2p's & 5p's in a tin.Since Xmas I have amassed £2 worth of 1p's.

If we keep the penny I would love to see the return of Britannia for the reverse.

They should ditch the 1p and the 2p in my opinion. It may raise some prices slightly, but for those items priced just below a psychological barrier (ie £1.99 etc), they would have to drop slightly.

Be a sad end to the copper & bronze series, but inevitable in my view - Finland has already ditched 1 & 2 euro cents and the Canadians are scrapping the 1c

The US cent must be one of the lowest value coins still in circulation, any lower that folk know of?

What - lose the oldest denomination we have, going back to the Roman "denarius"? No way, José! I agree we should lose those pathetic bronzes we have that are now all but worthless. What I say is that we redesignate "New P" as "Cents", and make the 10p (10c) a "penny". Then our honourable ancient penny can be preserved in name as it has been for 2000 years.

"New P"

hasnt that long since gone?

so....are you saying the 10p be called 10 cents and then penny....if so, why not just cut out the american bullshit and call the 10p a penny........anyhow mr peckris, im sure you will agree, whatever coin you call a penny these days, the RM will do a shite job of designing it :)

Agreed!

My problem with calling the 10p a penny is that technically the 10p is already ten pennies, so that could be more confusing in the long run! Whereas if we had cents, you could redesignate of our existing denominations a "penny" - the 10 seemed a suitable candidate.

then we could call the 5p a halfpenny, the 2p a farthing and the current penny a half farthing.....the 50p could become a 10 bob note and suddenly anyone over the age of 110 is happy again :D:D:D

Why not just have a pound made of 20 shillings (re-named 5p's) with the shilling the lowest circulating denomination and the penny still existing but only in accounting/digitally etc. The pound will still be 100 pennies. And no doubt the Royal Mint would make special proof pennies forever anyway so you know it'd never go away!

ive met your type in tesco's......chasing after the girl guides........have you got a licence for that zimmer of yours :D

it just goes to show though how difficult it would be to maybe do away with the lesser coinage...or maybe not, just the 10p becomes the lowest denomination, or as you say peck, 10p becomes a penny and theres 10 to the pound.

but what if........... when the pound becomes the lowest denomination..........and then the 2squid.......etc etc ad nausium ad infinitum.

thank god for tanners and double florins :D

That's the easy bit - just rename it a "penny" and let the pounds look after themselves :D

it's simple the penny is going down hill because the pound is going down hill, the pound is going down hill because the country is going down hill,

in recent months you've had what was called called devaluation of the pound now known as Quantitative easing -printing mony mony with no value, the problem is not the penny but what gives the penny worth.

The Euro is under more threat than the £.

What we need is a bit of a "dust up"

Why are we conveniently sending our best fighting ship to the Falklands?

In some countries the smaller denominations still exist but are no longer used. Make the 5p the smallest used denomination and if you need to give change for less than 5p give them a sweet or something. err hang on, can you still get a boiled sweet for less than 5p

Ah, the Italian 'small change' standby for decades! Now they just give Silvio Berlasconi cast offs (once they've reached legal age :D )
