Picked this up from the river a couple of weeks ago. No idea who it is though.

I really don't know my ancients but it looks similar to a Constans bronze, with the two victories holding wreaths on the reverse. See this coin, for example.

If you could get some better photos the legends might be easier to decipher. :)

So, is this the same coin as the original post. I have it down as S1154, but i struggle with the legends on these hammered coins.

Yes, both are last small cross. It would be easier to read if the pictures were smaller and not pixelated, but the second is a London coin. I think the moneyer is Lifinc.

Ok, i've reduced it from half the previous size, maybe it helps?

It's the same type of coin. Yours is Lyfinc on London. It appears to be the same coin as EMC 1997.0144:

Spink on-line catalogue is up. The Warminster mint Aethelred is up for £2,000 to £2,400 estimate. Blimey, there are some handsome coins in that auction.

£2,400, right on the estimate. :)

That's what I was willing to go to, i.e. £3K all in with the premium. I didn't buy it though as the price was reached in the room. If it hadn't been a bit pitted it would have gone for more because the grade was there, just not the physical condition.

Picked up another Aethelred recently from the Thames. I.D. from Martin Allen of the Fitzwilliam.

"This is a coin of the Hereford moneyer Lufumar, who is only known in

this type, Æthelred II's Last Small Cross type (c.1009-16). There is

another coin from this pair of dies in the Hermitage Museum in St

Petersburg (SCBI 50, 1201), and the reverse die has the unsusual reading

+LVMARH ON HERE. 'Lumarh' (as on this coin) and 'Lufumar' seem to be

versions of the name Leofmaer."

Anyone put a rough idea of the valuation of this penny? The Lizzie was found a few days later. The coin is much better "in hand", I just cant get a good picture.
