1902 Florin Good Value

I am restating my question on the end of Paulus' 1904 Florin topic since I did not get enough replies . I am just saying that the edward vii Florin has a fantastic design on the reverse. it is really making me want one. My 2010 copy of spink is telling me I should of been able to get a 1902 example for £55 in EF or £95 in UNC back then Which is just about in my price range and the cheapest date of the series. Paulus (thanks) pointed out that the one I was looking at; Florin looks like it has been cleaned and pointed out this one. There is also This. Thoughts comments and advice please:)

im looking at the first one and dont think its unc, there looks to be flattening on brittanias breasts and also the drape blowing across the trident lacks detail, i dont think its a weak strike.

just for referance...spink 2012 ef£70 and unc £120.

personally i think better could be found within your budget.

maybe you should email richard ingram he has a couple for sale, he will send pics by email, he has an aunc for £95 and an ef for £55.

you may be better off shopping around the coin dealers instead of relying on ebay.

Are you talking about Rendel Ingram ski? His grading is terrible in my opinion, i bought 2 coins from him but won't be back after what he sent. 1st coin in the post i can't see cleaning being evident 3rd coin has a scratch on the OBV, but as most would say, its your money and your choice.

Yes I would like to think I can get 2010 prices with a little patience. I am not particularly keen on buying on ebay a good dealer would be my preferred choice although as you say a lot of them overgrade too. A GEF would suffice me but i'll have to wait til payday.

my post wasn't meant to recommend rendell ,more an idea of getting the op to look around dealers lists rather than use flea bay. ive also to say ive never bought from rendell, so cannot comment on his grading. i only used rendell as his site showed he had 2 examples of that date listed.

It's Michael & Rendel Ingram ~ Father & Son partnership. Sorry to say they both really pissed me off a few months ago when I was trying to buy a coin off their site. Won't be dealing with them again.

The 1663 shilling I asked for opinions on the other day was Michael Gouby, he seems to grade and price fairly to me. I have also been slightly unimpressed with Ringram coins on the same criteria. I quite like the Coin Cellar ... and of course our Rob and Chris! That's all the dealers I have used so far (I think), except those that sold to me via flea bay.

choolie......im really sorry....my post was to try and show you there is more to life than ebay....i looked at a good few dealers sites for 1902 florins and pointed out this one as he had stock......sadly the thread has degenerated into a slagging him off thread rather than give you any reasonable help in judging the 2 coins on offer.........sorry for that

I'd also recommend Colin Cooke (Neil Paisley runs the concern now) Their prices are very reasonable. Also a guy called Richard Groves who is based in Scotland. He sold me a fantastic BU shilling for an absolute bargain price about 3 years back.

Not to mention, of course, the excellent dealers on this site !!! Indeed, our very own Red Riley (Derek) of Penny Crown Coins has a 1902 GEF florin for £70 ~ reduced from £80 here

Before you get too enamoured of the E7 florins, have a close look at the face! Yikes, NOT a sight for sore eyes....

Still I do like them but they tend to come rather flatly struck with reverse AND obverse issues.

no not fair at all..........., there is a huge gulf between the regular knowledgeable dealers and those who sell the overgraded polished/cleaned overpriced crap on ebay,..........and thats the whole point to choolie, find yourself a good knowledgeable dealer, bide youre time and get the piece you want.

That's a complete misrepresentation. There was a big criticism about some dealers' grading practices. Many of us also thought CC's grading left something to be desired (by no more than half a grade, to be fair), but that the service he provides has always been exemplary and his readiness to accept returns and give refunds cannot be faulted in any way. So to allege he "took a real beating" is halfway to a disgraceful remark.

Back to the original post - I feel the first link is arguably the best on offer; there's no hint of polishing or cleaning which is evident on the second, and as has been pointed out, the third has a massive scratch over the neck. However, I'm sure there are better out there if you're prepared to wait for the right coin. A good dealer is superior to eBay in that respect.

Ski, my post was'nt slagging off Ingram, it was my opinion as i've bought from him, so my opinion counts in that respect. If you buy from him then your opinion would count to. 1949 has also bought from him and has the same opinion as me, so, so far that 2 out of 2 misses regarding his grading. If you bought the same coins from ebay i'm sure you'd send them back if they were'nt to your standards, nothing to do with slagging, merely stating fact...

Oh and we seem to have missed another dealer from the site. John Stephenson, no one tried his site?
