Hi all

i have just started collecting British coins for starters.

I got various types of pound 2 pound & 50p coins in change and before long i had more in my folder than i knew were availale !!

now i have just been given a bag of various older coins such as pennies & crowns but most of them are filthy .......question is should i clean them ?? and how ?

Try a bit of hot soapy water and a softened wood(soaked in water tooth pick)

Pat dry.

Acetone (nail varnish remover will remove crud).

Experiment a bit...but start with the rubbish coins first.

You could do nothing and send them to a dealer in Cornwall and they will automatically come back 1 or 2 grades higher. :ph34r:

He's not a dealer, just someone who constantly shill bids and overgrades on ebay, oh and he cleans Silver to

Maybe the afore mentioned dealer does not actually clean coins he just buying in cheap cleaned coins and sells them as "full lustre" etc.

Even a dealer must have standards

I remember a certain regular dealer at the Midland Coin Fair once having a tray of "BU" bronze which was obviously cleaned EF. I never challenged him about it, but you do have to be on your guard.
