1845 Victoria half sovereign

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've sold a large amount of coins on this forum before and now it's time for another! This is an 1845 Victoria half sovereign, listed in Spinks as more valuable than any of the other dates of this series. Asking price will be the Spink value in fine - £300. PM me if you're interested!

Sorry for the poor images; I can get better ones on Saturday!

Robbie, by the look of it yours is less than Fine and Spinks price Guide is just that, a price guide. The next is a cut and paste from Toy Claytons website listing realistic prices for Half Sovereigns

Victoria

Note that bullion values have a marked effect on the value of half sovereigns, and recent changes have rendered the listings below obsolete. In January 2012 the minimum value of a half sovereign was about £124.

Yours i'd say was Poor, and listed here in Fine the pice is 140, it's probably only bullion value, maybe 140 quids worth depending on the bullion price today

You can go here and take a look http://www.coins-of-...s/halfs.html#QV

I'd split the difference and rate it Fair. No argument with the rest though.

I wonder whether with some there is an interpretation that Fine is the lowest grade? Just a thought ...

Yes, I'd go along with that. Even some high profile dealers aren't entirely free from that particular taint. It's quite extraordinary to me that grading can be reasonably accurate above F, but everything else gets bunged into the Fine bucket.
