Charles I Sixpences

Recommended Posts

Hello forum,

I was wondering if anybody could advise whether museums allow you to photograph coins? I've just finished my second year at uni and have an impossibly long 12 weeks to kill!

I have built quite a collection of sixpences from every reign back to Charles II and have recently entered the complex minefield of Charles I silver coins. Spink lists the many sixpences but very few have photographs, so I've decided to put together a photographic guidebook and study of the 40+ Charles I sixpences (for all the mints etc).

I wanted to seek advise before I swaned off to the National Museum in Wales, the Ashmolean etc. If it's unlikely I'd be allowed, perhaps I could ask forum members if they have examples I could use (they'd be credited of course) or perhaps, as a last resort I could produce a guide with drawings.

Thanks,

Darren

Darren,

A very interesting endeavour which you are embarking upon and I commend you.

Firstly, it always best to contact the curator in charge and ask regarding photography. Many museums will charge you for their own photographs as they won't allow you to take your own photographs. Having said that, if the photos are purely for research then some museums will allow you to take a few photos here and there.

I'm currently embarking upon research on the iconography of late Anglo-Saxon pennies and have arrangements with the Fitzwilliam and the National Museum in Copenhagen to view the collections and take my own photographs. Even so, the majority of photographs I shall be using are from private collections. Whilst it's great to be able to see a museum collection if you're looking for photographs of some types I would be inclined to say that there are coins that will fulfill your needs in private collections and all you'll have to do is ask.

If your guide is for commercial purposes then you are more likely to face barriers.

Kindest regards,

Clive.

Hi Clive,

Thanks for the reply. I will certainly bare in mind private collections and will be very grateful for any photographic images that people can provide. I'll start the ball rolling by emailing the curators to see what's what. At least then I can plan everything properly. I did a similar project for the Paintings of Ralph chubb (for a biography) a few years back and the museums of Britain were very expensive regarding images. Some charged me over £50. Nevertheless I managed to collect them all in the end! The book is unfinished but I've been gettting emails from curators asking if I can tell them about Chubb for their records!

At the moment I dont really plan on making a guide for commercial purposes. If it turns out I get enough information and photographs it might be useful for a guide, it's certainly something I'd happily share with fellow collectors and enthusiasts.

Thanks,

Darren

Here are a few nice pictures of Charles I sixpences, If they are any help. Maybe you could ask permission to use them for your works.

A few of the Bole Collection coins are illustrated here: http://www.dnw.co.uk/coins/auctions/rostrumauctions/auctioncatalogue/pdfs/Coins%209%20Dec%2010.pdf

And if you can get a copy of the Brooker collection book (Coins of Charles I, The John Brooker Collection, volume 33 of the Syllogue of Coins of the British Isles, by J.J. North & P.J. Preston-Morley, London 1984) all of John Brooker's coins are illustrated.

And a few more here: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/results.php?search=charles+sixpence&s=0&results=100
