Would anyone like a knackered George III coin... possibly a fake?

I have a coin, which is of George III, the date looks like 1777, but I could not find any bronze/copper listed for this date, so it may be the J77J or similar.

The reason I think it may be some sort of fake, or a token (I have no clue really!) is that it is extremely worn, the portrait does not look quite right. The beeding around the edges is non existent, yet you can clearly see tiny details like the lines in the hair. It is also extremely thin. Also, around the edges where it is scratched, there seems to be really bright copper colour shining throgh. It just does not look or feel right.

Anyways, I can not identify it myself, and I think posting a picture will be of no use. I know it is probably worthless, but thought I would see if anyone has any specific interest in this period and would like to take a look at it, even if it is just out of curiosity.

During George 111 reign there was a shortage of copper.

The majority of the copper circulating were evasions (lighter and fairly crude).

These evasions can have dates when there was no official mintage.

They are collectable in their own right especially in the US.

That is interesting. I thought myself it may of been a halfpenny or farthing, but the shield on the reverse is slanting to the left. The only pictures I have found on the net, similar to this coin and date show the shield slanting to the right.

Hopefully azda can can confirm what it is after he has had a look at it.

Just to strike (forgive the pun) a serious note - Americans are mad for those Geo III evasions for some reason, and you might do quite well to sell it on USA eBay.

Yep, advertise it as a "colonial coin", make sure to put it in the US ---> Colonials section of eBay along with the British one. Say it was like the ones that circulated in the colonies. Heck, put on it first full year of US independence. Doesn't much matter that its a low grade to most US collectors.

I personally do not like this coin, so I will give it a go on eBay, will stick it on for 99p and see what happens...

I will list it as "George III evasion coin 1771 or 1777" (and let the buyer decide the date)

Could someone please confirm what denomination it is please? I do not want to mislead potential buyers.

I think it is a hammered guinea.

About 28mm it will be a 1/2d (which it looks like) anything smaller a 1/4d....start it at 99p and that is where it will finish.
