Early Milled

Just want an opinion on the grade of this coin.

It is a 1679 crown which is not in my area of expertise. If it was a post 1799 coin then I would grade it as Fair but having looked around a few dealers sites for comparision I am inclined to grade it as Fine. Opinions from the experts wanted please.

As far as I can tell it is the Fourth Bust. Edge date TRICESIMO PRIMO

I'd say Fair/NF

Obverse : legend intact but very little detail left on the portrait. So I'd say About Fair.

Reverse : legend beginning to wear away in parts, so it is not really even Fair.

I'd say it is between Poor and Fair, perhaps nudging nearer to Fair.

I don't believe the age or rarity of early milled should influence the grading, I would also have to say Fair at best

Up to now my main area has been copper and bronze but have decided to venture into crowns, very nice and chunky even in low grades.

I just love the toning on some of these 200-300 year old coins and no problems with verdigris However thr prices are a bit restricting!

I don't know what your budget is, but Charles II and William III are inexpensive relative to other early milled (you should be able to pick most up for under 100 in about Fine)? And Anne 1706 onwards and most George II (although a little more), if your not holding out for VF+! Some interesting varieties too, different busts and over-dates and rose below for Charles 2, different busts for William, captured silver from VIGO Bay for Anne, along with Edinburgh mint, plain, plumes, and roses AND plumes. Similar for George II, substituting LIMA for VIGO, and roses and R&P, (but no plumes only variety).

Sadly, there are a few dealers who would advertise this as Fine or Near Fine, as there does sometimes seem to be grade drift with age.

Already have Peter it's sitting on my desk next to me and yes for me it has eye appeal. I am pleased with it and that is the main thing.

Normally I would agree with you choolie but crowns in VF and above kind of overstep my budget! I have most of the crowns post 1818 except the Proofs, 1847 Young Head, a few of the old heads and the only Wreath I have is the 1928. Just thought it would be nice to try and get a few earlier examples staying in budget of cause which this one did.

as if! I think I did say "except Proofs" and I believe the Gothic crowns fall under this category and although there are worn examples it was not meant to be a currency coin. Am I wrong?

That's absolutely correct. Are they all proofs? Not sure, but I am sure someone will tell us!

I am in the collecting situation where I believe there are plenty of non-proof Gothic crowns, which is both good and bad!!! They are beautiful though, although I am always happy with ogling my EF gothic florins!

Seabys in their 1969 English Silver Coinage say " Mr Stride formerly Chief Clerk

of the Royal Mint, informs us that the Gothic Crowns were never issued for ordinary

circulation and that they were all struck in Proof state. Some appear with the raised

design heavily frosted, these apparently were early strikings.

Spinks in the 1998 Coinage of England were NOT calling them Proofs . I dont have the

earlier Seabys editions to see when they or Spinks removed the " Proof " definition .

So its " up in the air " though I believe ALL Gothic Crowns are in fact Proofs .

Not that I would wish for you to get too excited, but I won my first ever tenner tonight - and this is since the lottery began! I think those odds in themselves are statistically interesting, given that on average I've been a regularly participator since the very beginning, more or less!

None-the-less, an uncirculated FDC gothic crown is your's should fortune favour me!
