Hi i have found a penny that my grandad gave me from 1916 but it is different. Instead of having the usual Britannia design on the back it says " In loving memory of lord Kitcener drowned HMS Hampshire 5th june" it also has a picture of a cross. It is in very good condition, or I think so (as a person who knows nothing about coins)and I was wondering if anyone could give me a value for it?

It's difficult to tell without seeing it I'm afraid. Any chance you can post a photo? It might be a coin that has been altered, or possibly it's actually not a coin but a medallion.

You can post photos of up to 150kb size directly into replies from your computer, or if you have a photo hosting account like flikr or photobucket, you can post the link.

Very nice! I hoped it might be engraved. Another member here has an interest in engraved coins and might be able to give an opinion.

In the meantime I've copied your links to make it easier for others to view.

I just uploaded 2 photos to photobucket, http://s1241.photobucket.com/profile/hammers133

Hi Hammers, and welcome aboard!

Another very clever piece of trench art, I'd say! Though Lord knows how those poor men of WW1 every found the time or equipment to carry out some of the amazing works that are out there, it's beyond comprehension.

These pieces really are amazing collectable in my eyes, not worth anything like what they should be, given the context of their origin.

The reverse has been recessed and hand carved to pass away the hours! If you look at the reverse, you can still see the trident (3-pronged spear) at the 1 O'Clock edge, very cleverly done, but just a 'regular' 'graffitied' penny!

Hi Coinery, Yes they are very nice pieces but are they not worth very much then?

Don't order a Ferrari! There are a few others on here with their fingers much more on the pulse, price wise, I'm sure they'll be adding to this shortly!

You can't price something that is unique, and all of these types are unique.

If the subject matter was more appealing it could do £100+, I would guess yours would be in the £20-£50 region though.

Yes, each being engraved by individuals. Its a nice piece and maybe worth hanging onto unless you are really desperate to sell. These engraved coins are finding their way into the market, but not quite popular just yet.

Wasn't planning on selling it just came across it yesterday and wanted to find out more. It's nice to know that I have a one off piece but i'm surprised that a single person could engrave it with such detail and precision.

Yours is quite crude compared to some. I just had a George V threepence sell yesterday that had been engraved with the entire Lords Prayer, now that is intricate work!

That'll be the exceedingly rare recessed ear variety without the broken border tooth then? B)

Hi Hammers – nice engraved coin you have there. Personally I think it may be worth a little more as it refers to an actual historical event which happened on the same year as the coin itself. here

If you can find out how your grandfather came by the coin and discover the story behind the coin this will add more value,1916 in the scheme of things is not that far back.

Engraved coins are becoming more popular and I would imagine if you put that on ebay today you might get around £100 – more you can provide a history and if someone was particularly interested in Maritime history. However as anything fashionable, do this in 5 years time you may get substantially more or less.

The 1943 three pence stands a chance, but only if it's a silver 3d and in high grade, and even then we're not talking megabucks!

Very nice! I hoped it might be engraved. Another member here has an interest in engraved coins and might be able to give an opinion.

I have no idea? It's a recessed ear anyway.

I believe current wisdom is that all recessed ear pennies from 1915 & 1916 have the chipped tooth by the I of BRITT. I searched this forum and noted you had posted your own 1915 example which also exhibits the chipped tooth. There maybe those that don't, but certainly VR Court doesn't mention any.

The tooth by the I is very indistinct, so it could be a half tooth I guess? The characterics of the obverse appear to be those of a recessed ear, but with major surgery to the reverse, it's not clear cut I suppose.

what is 'the tooth' and what is a 'recessed ear'? I know near enough nothing about coins haha.
