question re search default page

I've just screwed up my settings. Using Mozilla Firefox, I used to have Google as my default search page which was logical as I obviously want the ability to search the web. Hitting the + tab brought up a second search page but this time it was AVG search. Trying to get all pages to default to Google, I hit the 'set this page as default' and now every search page comes up as AVG which is not what I intended. Can't see how to set Google as the default on either the first or subsequent pages without searching for Google and taking extra steps. At least if I can get back to the original setting it would be useful as I need Google to search. Preferably I would like to be able to search all open windows using Google. Clues anyone? Thanks.

I use Firefox Rob, give this a try...

At the top of firefox, next to the long search bar where you input web addresses, there should be a smaller bar to the right. Mine is currently "Google" with a little icon. Click the icon, then the "manage search engines" option, you should then be able to select "AVG" and then just click "Remove".

After saving the settings above, you should just need to revert back to the deafault homepage, this should be:

Options>General, then just "restore to default" then hit OK.

I'm pretty sure you can also go to the google search page and find a button somewhere that either says something like 'make my homepage' or 'set as default' etc.

I'm not on the PC so can't check exactly!

In Firefox, you can drag the current page icon (at the left hand side of the address bar) on to the 'homepage' button.

Opening Firefox now defaults again to the Google search page, but the second and subsequent ones don't. i.e. I'm back to where I was this morning, but still haven't got rid of the AVG search. What does 'restore default new tab' at the bottom of the AVG page mean and do? Last time I clicked on something on the AVG page it started this thread.

We have a technology crisis overload in the house at the moment. Last Thursday the wife decided to wash some curtains in the bath and out fell my mobile. Silly sod that I am decided to drag myself into the 20th century and bought a new phone. Wish I had stuck with something simpler that just makes and receives phone calls!!

Had a quick search on the Web and you're not alone with your AVG problem. There are a number of fixes being suggested which may be worth a try.

I do not know if you have fixed it yet Rob, but I had the same problem over the last few days, a download I made changed my "New Tab" on firefox to a different search bar! not AVG, but the problem was the same. I have managed to fix it, so maybe this will put yours back to normal too...

Open firefox, asuming this takes you to the firefox homepage, type about:config in the searh bar, it will pop up and ask if your sure, click the "i'll be carful I promise" button to proceed.

You can either scroll down the list and find the following settings, or just type them exactly as I have here, into the search box:

You then right click on these settings and click "reset"

browser.search.defaultenginename

keyword.URL

If this does not work, open the about:config again, and scroll down to find all the AVG entries, if any say "search engine", "search results", "extensions." or similar reset these also. Anything that says "user set" you can reset without damaging firefox.

You can also use the "manage search engines" option as discussed earlier in the thread, and go ahead and "remove" all of the search engines except Google.

Inevitable result of pressing Yes to all the options in the install!

Avira has just updated itself on mine, and the first two checkboxes it offers you are options to do just that:

- Make itself the default search engine

- Make itself your browser home page

Always say No to such nonsense.
