Strange 50p

Recommended Posts

Guest Mark_I'm_a_Guest

A have a 12 sided 50p coin - probably Australian .... Don't know where it came from ....

One Side has the 50 at the bottom of it with an old flag monarchy type thing above, either side of this is a Kangaroo and a Flamingo ....

Other Side says Elizabeth II then Australia 1999

I am guessing it's a 50p but maybe of course it's 50 cents ?

If I ever find the shop that fobbed this off on my missus ....

Is it worth anything ? It's actually quite a nice coin ....

Yes, it sounds like it is Australian, and yes, it is 50 cents. Being so new, unless it is perfect shape (which I doubt if your wife got it in change in UK), then it is only worth face value.

By the way, at current exchange rates, that Aussie 50 cent piece is only worth 20p.

I got a US quarter in my change about a year ago, it is worth just a bit more than the 10p that it was supposed to be!

not really, got a nice set of "Coins of the Realm" mounted (on my wall) with all the old coins in it - even has a farthing in it .... bought it for my son really so one day he could see what the "old" money was like - also got a few of them £5 special coins a few years ago knocking about ....

My father-in-law is the serious collector - he has a room full of coins, spends about 2k a week on coins lol

What kind of coins does your father-in-law collect then? You should direct him to this forum! :D

I don't know really I think it's mainly English, I've seen him order coins direct from the mint for like £800 a coin - i have to fill out the forms for him sometimes !!,

He's now 70 years old so he doesn't have a clue how to switch a computer on let alone what a forum is !!!

However, he's been a collector all his life and I guess when he dies my wife will want to sell the coins anyway .... so I may be back on here in a few years time or twenty years time.... lol

He keeps saying he's interested in the internet but I don't have the time to help him work a PC as my job is writing computer software he knows I know a lot about computers but I already have enough computer illiterate friends and "my mum" who keep me occupied fixing their pesky computers ....

"Bill Gates has a lot to answer for" ....
