Just starting a collection

Hey everyone.

After finding a small tub of coins I bought a while ago, I've decided to start collecting coins again. My collection as it stands includes:

1946 Farthing

1954 Half Penny

1921 One Penny

1954 Three Pence

1955 One Shilling

1961 Two Shillings

1947 Half Crown

1965 Crown (Churchill Commemorative)

I'd also like to start a collection of post-decimal coins. I have yet to start that one.

Could somebody suggest the best way to proceed with these two collections, keeping in mind there are no coin shops in my town (that I am aware of)

Don't feel put off by the lack of response, there appears to be a few site technical difficulties! I've been onboard over a year now, and it's never happened before, so no big deal I don't think?

Anyway, I've struggled to leave you this post, as it's been difficult to move through the links but, when the site's back to normal, have a browse through the books for sale here. The Check Your Change book has been highly recommended by many for those post-decimal rarities!

Could be a good starting point!

Hi DJMONTY,I'd probably choose a particular denomination to collect,e.g farthings and concentrate on them.At the end of the day it's up to you,there are no rules.Youv'e made a good move by posting on this site.Some of these guys(and dolls)have been collecting for years.Happy hunting!!

Hello and welcome. It's maybe better to focus on one thing at a time........Time and money will always restrict the average collector. Take your time and look at what sort/type coins interest you then focus in that area of collecting. Ask yourself what you want to eventually achieve in collecting, is it for the retirement or because you love coins, many questions only you can answer, forums members can only help in other respects, but always enjoy the coins you buy.....

Many books are avaliable on the subjetc, some written by members here. The banner at the top of the site will show you some that are very helpful. If in doubt, always ask, it can get a bit fiesty here, but we mean no harm, just watch out for the old guy called Peckris, he bites

Wise advice...always good to have a focus to a collection, but if you don't know what that is yet, try a trip to a local coin fair to give you some ideas and an opportunity to look at various collecting areas in the flesh

Even if the "D" in DJMonty stands for "Dave", you're still safe with me

Your chosen hobby is a good one, with a lot of enthusiasts. The small tub you have will hopefully kick-start your ambition to collect coins - you've had some good advice, I'll only add one thing : collect in the highest grade you can afford (and if you need any help in grading, that book in the advert above, "Grading British Coins", is a fantastic place to start, and well worth buying and perusing).

Roughly about the same purchasing power! it would have bought a decent sized chocolate bar

I left myself open for that. It was late on a Friday night and my English O level let me down
