Baldwins Auction 77

Anyone took a look through their auction catalogue? Its not for the average collector, some amazing coins in there, the farthing boys should get their credit cards out

There's a broad mix for everyone. The only thing missing is low grade washers, but you wouldn't sell them through an auction like that anyway. That's ebay's preserve.

Its one of those auctions Rob where the average collector could buy 1 coin probably, problem being there's so much choice.

Correct, but it means that everyone can have something. Very few people could buy the lot, even within a sub-section - say all the Henry pennies or the angels etc. So just make a list of potential purchases and work your way through it. There are very few sales at the main auction houses where either/or decisions don't have to be made. You either wait for something to come along at the right price, or decide you want a particular piece however much it costs and throw the book away. Your choice. Sometimes you pick up more than expected, sometimes nothing.

Some lovely coins, as there are also in the St. James Auction (in conjunction with Baldwins) on 1st October. Serious collectors of early milled silver and gold will be giving their wallets a real hammering for sure!

Very little Elizabeth hammered, though a nice crown however.

The two 6d's (2705 and 2706) I just can't fathom the pricing, 1568 being just about the most common of dates, and it's hardly drop-dead (other than it's estimate). The other is also nothing special.

I can't seem to find the StJames catalogue for Oct 1st, have you got a link?

No, but www.sixbid.com has all these listed...

Would I be right in thinking there's no 'extra' fee for using sixbid, just the auction house buyers' premium?

Also, does anyone here have plans to be on the floor at StJames?

I won't be at either auction in person, just following on Sixbid. There's no extra premium for the Sixbid service. Just remember to register in advance if you want to bid, rather than only follow the auction.

Lot 2619 for the farthing gentlemen! http://www.sixbid.com/nav.php?p=viewlot&sid=679&lot=2619

Now you'd want that, wouldn't you! What a beautiful coin! B)

I haven't stretched to patterns. It is an attractive silver disc though. B)

It would also currently not fit into my collecting habits...however saying that I have looked at a few of the Brussels Hoard

There are some nice farthings in there, but the ones I would go for are out of my budget at the moment and the estimates are quite strong all things considered....oh well until the next time!!

well peck the thought had run through my mind, last year london had one for sale with an estimate of £500-600, it was apparently very scratched with no mention of that in the london catalogue.....he reckoned on it being worth maybe £300, it was so scratched it hammered at £1000 plus premium/vat

the pics look really good!!!.
