my oldest boy ben has recently been giveh his grandads coin collection and now has the bug? he wants to start collecting british coins to continue this collection and i think we are going to collect the annual sets to start with and generally anything else he likes.

what are the best books/price guides/ for him o get to help him on this quest lol

This may not be the popular vote, but I'm going to stick my neck out and say get yourself a Spink's catalogue. At your son's level it doesn't have to be the 2012, you can get a two or three year old copy for a couple of quid on ebay. I think it would be your best bet for now!

And possibly 'check your change' available on this website's homepage?

My advice would be for you to get more involved and learn more about the hobby as i'm assuming the cash will be taken from your wallet and not the kids

Try getting him into crowns from the sixties ,seventies and early eighties.

They are really cheap and will be fun for him as well

It would be interesting to know what coins he already has and add to them as a theme if there is one. You could collect by year or coin face value and that would allow a search through your change. The olympic 50 pences seem to have struck the imagination of the nation and there are quite a few varieties of 50 pences, pound and 2 pound coins to be collected now. If they are pre-decimal coins then get decent examples of each denomination of coins from each reign where possible.

The 'specimen sets' (brightly coloured holders; available from Post Offices for around £20) could be ok. However, the proof sets are hugely overpriced by the Royal Mint and can generally be got a year or three later at auctions for less than half their original issue price.
