I know I've asked this before but I dug out an old issue of Coin News (Oct 2003) and flicked through it and found it quite interesting. Does anyone here get it and if so, what do you think about it?

I get it from my local newsagents and I have just got this months copy! It is really quite endulging once you read some of the articles. You should get this months issue Oli, its great! They also have auction reports and market trends as well as competitions, for example this month you can win a 1974 sovereign and runners-up get a copy of Coin Year Book 2005.

Is your newsagents a chain or is it just a single shop? I can't seem to find it even in WHSmith!

It is a single shop but I had to search through about ten different ones before I found out that my local one gets two copies a month.

Btw. I also looked in my local Whsmiths but they only have stamp magazines!

I get coin news, and i also have this months issue. Jons right; it is pretty good. they have an insight on a particular coin every issue. There was an interesting one on Victorian Bun Head halfpennies recently. There is a price guide too, and a collectors page, where collectors tell people about things that have happened to them regarding numismatics. For example, there was one recently where a man had gone into a coin shop and put on some magnifying glasses and thought the shillings were half crowns!

Are you entering the competition to win a 1974 sovereign then William?

i don't bother with Coin News, even those price guide things they put in they seem to go round in circles... halfcrowns, crowns, farthings, halfpennies, pennies, threepences, halfcrowns, farthings, pennies, halfpennies, crowns...

Haven't seen shillings or sixpences come up yet, and no sovereigns either!

Last month they did £5 and £2 pieces and this month they are doing guinea fractions.

You should, it covers almost every section of numismatics. Chris' advert is also in there!

Wow guinea fractions... when are they gonna do full guineas and half guineas? (You know something useful!)

To answer Oli's question: It wasn't that sort of question.....they always set either a crossword or a picture question. This month you had to tell the difference between two coins. The closing date for these competitions is about three months after the issue comes out.

To answer Sylvesters question: They are doing half guineas this month, guineas are next month.

These have been and gone in earlier issues this year. These lists are one of the main reasons I buy it (from W.H. Smith) but I can't say I read it from cover to cover. There's a whole section on banknotes which just makes my eyes glaze over.

If you just want the values Sylvester, just buy a copy of coin yearbook because that is where they get the values from.........or better still buy a copy of CC2004 ;):D

I have a copy of CC2004 but that's no good cos my collection finishes at 1758 and CC doesn't begin till 1820!
