Lets have a predecimal fund and buy the coin. Get it slabbed by PCGS and see what it could get at Heritage. It would be a good experiment.

If they don't give it MS65 I would be shocked.

Hey this could be a good business plan.

Andy Bruce once tried to raise funds on a scheme where the risk is shared on premier coins.

I do think there are enough experts on the forum to give this a go for minimum risk. :)

Does it water it down too much to go 4 ways? Who's going to co-ordinate it, get it slabbed and submitted at heritage? I'll come on board for the experiment! Don't forget all the other expenses, post, etc...post to slab, return post...post to states! Could be fun exposing the process however :) :)

It could all go horribly wrong. Disregarding the shite on the scanner bed, consider the story of the P1235 copper proof halfpenny below. This used to be in my collection and I sold it to Hus six years ago only to buy it back again later. I then sold it to a member of the PCGS forum who was looking for an example. I was confident it would grade well, but it came back as MS62 although it had no wear, digs or hairlines. They couldn't even identify it as a proof despite Peck devoting over a full page to the description in his book. It is as you say a lottery, and certainly doesn't inspire confidence.

It's fair to say that I would happily buy this at MS62 prices any day of the week, given the obligatory alignment of number and price when it comes to slabs.

Right :)

The idea is implanted.

Say we went for a raw Silver UK coin max price the team buys at £500.Expenses say 20% for slabbing etc.

£600 should cover the cost.

If it fails to get in the slab just put it back in the raw market.

Food for thought over Xmas chaps.

Before we close a deal and start PM's who would want in?6 would be ideal. :)

Which coin shall we go for? 6d,1/-,2/-,2/6,crown?

Rob's selection would give me confidence on his nous and grading ability.

or pick a Predecimal/Cooke/Snowdon/Riley/Lloyd Bennet/Ebay!!!! coin.

It could be fun :)

Keep the thread going before we go underground.

£100 investment which will be worth at least £75 and the sky is the limit. :D

I'm still in, 6 people would be about right i'd say, 100 quid each, we'd have to pick the right coin though, agree with the silver, so need to keep the eyes open for something that could grade in the MS bracket 64-67 in our humble opinions. Maybe some of the dealers has something we could play with?

Why don't you take something that has been previously graded by either NGC or PCGS whether cracked out or not? It gives you a ballpark for what it will grade. There is no shortage of overgraded material but a fair smattering of undergraded stuff too. Better still, go for a mis-attribution and crack it out, as the TPG will have virtually guaranteed you the discount to book you need.

What's wrong with the Cooke coin? Could be interesting to see how that grades and sells with Heritage?

Regardless, I'm in for a share of the fun, if someone wants to take the reigns! I have to confess though that understanding how a grading company arrives at a particular number is tiring to me, and of little interest to the coins I'm playing with, but I'm sure I'd learn a 100 quid's worth from it ;-)

The cooke one is perhaps to bright and shiny for the American TPGs, it might need some colour to push it along. Anyone got some spare petrol?

Count me in on this, Peter (or for another coin, you guys) ~ but I'm going to have to be £50 max as I'm virtually skint until new year having spent £775 on 3 new coins in the last month alone.

....and what with Christmas an all.....

edit: could drop in £100 as soon as we reach new year and I get paid. Let me know.

Could always make it a £120 stake, I'll cover 1949 until the new year, if that's agreeable?

I think if someone phoned CC we could maybe negotiate a better price for the 1835, say 300 GBP?

Heritage Auction (World Coins) the one after January is April 17th , then September.

The coin will need to be submitted to PCGS Paris.

Balwins,Dix Noonan,Knightsbridge & London Coin Co are Agents

(anyone live nearby or has anyone got a good contact?)_

I did pick up a slabbed PCGS florin MS65 from the UK.(not PCGS prices but UK unc)

This maybe the way to go in checking any PCGS graded coins at non internet auctions.

I've googled PCGS UK and on a forum one poor chap paid over $200 for slabbing and then had to pay $100 border tax to get his coins back.

Methinks we need a bit of research.

Our initial rush of enthusiasm meets reality. Never mind.

I've got an 1888 MS65 slabbed bun penny, but unfortunately, I don't live anywhere near the agents.

Oft you join the PCGS Europe collectors Club you can get 4 Coins slabbed free at the lowest entry Level or 8 coins for the highest entry Level. I posted a link to PCGS Europe on the previous page

I'll send an email to Heritage later, I'm sure I read somewhere that they'll get raw coins slabbed for their auctions, could be wrong? The coin would be going just one way, then, with just one lot of post, and no import taxes!

This is what the experiment's all about, I guess, finding these things out by hard-won experience!

I'm going to send a couple of trial hammereds to them, so I need to 'mail them anyway!
