Another very nice coin from what was obviously a quality collection

This GEF 1860 with lustre (1 + C, F7, I think), is from the lady who is selling off her late husband's bun penny collection. It looks like he was a man who appreciated quality items, if what she's sold so far is anything to go by.

Currently standing at £565 with 3 days to go at the time of posting, I would imagine it'll get a bit more. Someone here might be interested, possibly.

Colin Cooke has one in not dissimilar condition for £1200 (ex Alderley collection)

The border looks a bit haphazard though. To me anyway.

Yes, I had noticed this coin and it's probably better than my example but maybe not quite good enough to justify an upgrade. Interesting that the border beads on mine are even more damaged/haphazard:

Your F6 is like mine, Accumulator, with some of the actual beads themselves missing, presumably "knocked off" at some point. Shame.

I honestly don't know, Declan.

Mine is shown below. As you can see, beads partially missing at between about 10 and 11 o'clock. As though chipped off. Whether caused by die fill or other external damage, just not sure. Only shown reverse as obverse beads complete.

Interesting! The damage looks the same type as the penny on Mr Accumulator's site, although I suppose if it was the same die, it would be the same beads filled...

£1500 for that example was a vast amount to pay. I couldn't quite give it UNC but it has made UNC money and I think the second highest recorded price for an F7?

The Laurie Bamford specimen sold for £1529 ~ not sure if that was the actual highest.

The specimen on Colin Cooke's site, being offered for £1200, is comparable with the one just sold. Maybe not as much lustre, and just a suspicion of slight pitting on the obverse.

The when is not relevant, it's the maximum amount that counts. Most people bid near the end to prevent an early high bid from being shilled, but a large enough bid in the first second will still win if it's greater than everbody else's maximum.

As I said earlier Steve £800 was to be my max and the coin was to replace a GVF in the collection. There looked to be wear to the high points which drags it down to GEF. At £1500 you are on very thin ice if the pics flatter the coin and the best bet with ebay is to bid at half a grade below what you think it looks like as that saves you from getting burnt.

£1500 should secure a true unc in a major house auction.
