Three unidentified Edwards

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm a newcomer here. Have recently started to pull together a coin collection from scratch, having lost mine during a most troublesome house move.

Any advice on these recent Edward acquisitions would be hugely appreciated! This one one is supposed to be an Edward III halfgroat.

It is indeed a halfgroat of Edward III. London mint. Better images would aid identification but it does not seem to have the wedge shaped tail, I would suggest series D of the Pre-Treaty Period.

If you can get better photographs up we might be able to help you further.

Good luck with your new collection! :)

Swift reply. Thank you! How is it known that this is a halfgroat? Is there some of the inscription I'm not getting?

Not sure how to get better pictures, really. The flash reflects off the coin, so I was using lamplight. Any other suggestions greatfully appreciated!

PS pre-treaty period is 1351-61, right...?

Also, obviously it's a London mint, but what is the rest of the reverse inscription referring to...?

The denomination can be deduced from the diameter of the coin. Although sometimes it is easy to work out stylistically.

With regard to pictures, your best bet is in natural daylight and take plenty of pictures to increase your chances of getting a sharp one. Pre-Treaty is indeed 1351-1361.

As for the legends, the outer legend on the reverse reads: POSVI DEVM ADIVTOREM MEVM which roughly translates to 'I have made God my helper'.
