Can anyone please exlain how such things are created?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Im looking at 20 pence coin from 2009.

The lions foot which is centered in the middle of the coin on the 2009 looks to only have two toes opposed to three toes on the normal circulating example. In reality there are three toes visible on the coin. But the second and third toes are bonded in the sense there is a piece of metal obstrucing the gap making them appear as one.

Appreciated, its not of mass importance. And hardly dramatic.. lol

Can anyone please exlain how such things are created?

Also, does anyone think people have interest in such coins?

I cant connect the camera to the PC at present but the error is as simple as I have described.

many thanks in advance

Detail can be missing as a result of die fill or die damage. Fine relief detail on the die can be blocked with debris from the flan surface, whilst fine die detail can be broken off the die if relatively delicate enough. Six of one, half a dozen of the other and each individual case on its merits.

The Royal Mint's currency striking standards have slipped appallingly in recent years - there are any number of errors, often 'blobs' of metal appearing somewhere on the design. Some people do collect these, but IMO they crop up too often to be of any real value, compared to the rarity of such phenomena predecimal (e.g. the 1946 'die flaw' penny).

Hi thankyou for your responses.

I have been trawling this forum reading into Penny varieties amongst other things.

Its quite complicated for the beginner to translate the terminology and understand differences.

I have a collcection of Pennys I have accumalated over time.

Nothing speacial by any means!! (well I dont think so anyway)

I have:

1827

1862 - 2

1902

1903

1904 - 2

1905

1906 - 2

1907

1908

1909

1910

1912

1914

1916

1918

1920

1928

1929

1936 - 2

1937 - 2

1939 - 2

1945 - 2

And too many to list for the 1960s

the overall standard of preservation is low with these coins.

With the odd exception with lustre and toning.

The 1827 Penny I have is typically pitted and in poor condition but i payed 50 euro centimes for it.

So im not complaining.

With the years I have noted is there any variations worth looking out for. I have done some research into the more simpler variations of these years. None of my coins have mintmarks. And im sure the 1862 is the regular variety.

And the 1903s are the regular closed 3 varietys etc etc.

Any information would be great. Or direction for more online resources. Mainly I have been referring to here and the COINS OF THE UK website.

many many thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Without seeing photos of the coins its hard to comment, but if they are generally in a 'low' state of preservation it's unlikely you have anything of value. The exception would be the 1827, which you are aware of. Most examples from this year are pitted or corroded, but even these have significant value.

Regarding on-line resources, you can look at Tony Clayton's site (the one you mention) and you are welcome to look at the photographs of my pennies by following the signature below.

Thanks guys,

I will look into Michael Freemans book.

Also il take a look at your "accumalation" Accumalator.

In the meantime il see about getting some pictures uploaded.

Its surprising how many English coins are laying dorment here in France.

People are not searching or interested in English coins. (from what I can see anyway)

For example the the 1827 Penny Im sure wouldnt have touched the sides in the UK.

my example is terrible though

Its considerably worse than this example and slightly and out ouf shape!post-7865-016579600 1360599225_thumb.jpg

That is expensive! Frankly, in that condition, it would be inclined to suggest that anyone saved up a little more and waited for a much better example. They do appear on eBay quite regularly.
