So you've bought an upgrade for your collection.What do you do with the old one? Do you sell it straight away or wait abit hoping to get a better price later.Im thinking mainly of rare coins,such as a 1905 shilling,which are less likely to fall in value

I'm on a tight budget so nine times out of ten, I try to sell on straight away as I'll need the cash for further purchases.

Same as you Tom, but it would be kind of fun to put together a B collection, just in case. When I started I put aside an example of any coin I considered a perfect UNC (20th century stuff, obviously!), and called it The Perfection Collection, effectively relegating everything else to B status. That didn't last long, of course, as I needed the stock.

I'm actually in that position right now, as I have a number of relegated coins following upgrades.

I sold the last lot to Colin Cooke. Hoping to do the same again as part exchange for another coin.

Sometimes I can upgrade and have no regrets, but I will look at the coin it replaces and think "Hey, I still like it" and then it goes into what Declan calls a B collection (though it's not organised as such!). I remember when I got my first BU Eddy penny in the 70s (yeah yeah 1902) it replaced one that was dark in colour and AEF. But somehow, the older one begged to be kept, and being dark with a little rubbing wear to highlight the hair details, it was easier to see the hair details than on the BU specimen. Weird I know, but there you go.

I have every intention of selling my redundant coins on, as I'm really only interested in a owning a single collection. I don't need spares. One day I'll have a good sort out and put a few on eBay, probably. There's no rush because prices seem to be rising still, though so are purchases!

Well, I do on occasion but note that in recent years as I want pieces that I have no business owning, I put them up for trade and make the impossible somehow and magically happen. I do regret some of those "B" coins, and remember one Unc. 1903 half crown that I hate thinking about....Yikes!

I have a clearout every now and again, usually when I need funds. I'm about to have one now as the wife wants to go home for Christmas, yes we need to buy the tickets soon, and it'll make a hole in £3000.

I really struggle with upgrades! Near impossible most times for me to make a decision between hammered improvements as, in most cases, the replacement coin, never being perfect, will be lesser in some component of the legend or bust...nightmare, as I always feel like keeping the old coin just for the perfect IZA in Elizabeth!

I really, really, struggle with modern stuff (G5/G6), as then it comes down to minute spots, Christ, a rolled two of Colin's 1942 farthings around in my fingers for hours, trying to decide which was the most perfect...I probably missed an amazing Liz or bargain UNC halfcrown of G5 on the 'bay, while I was doing that, NIGHTMARE!

Yes, I did do that and maybe should have held it (the '03 2/6) but it was beautiful. Maybe Spink vintage early '90s? Can't remember, but the one I have is quite pleasant.

Easy to do. You have a nice unc, then later on you see another which appeals so you buy that too. Then spend a ridiculous amount of time comparing the two and deciding which to get rid of before being overcome by indecision.
