London Coins Auction - 1851 Halfpenny

Recommended Posts

I looked through the Victorian Copper and Bronze in the latest London Coins auction.

Lot 2034 is: "Halfpenny 1851 No Dots on Shield Reverse A Peck 1534 VF, the rarity of this piece somewhat under-rated, we note that there was no example in the Nicholson collection".

Unfortunately, the photos of the reverse indicate otherwise (Reverse B, Peck 1535).

I contacted London Coins and asked for a clarification. I received an answer from Mr. Paul Redford at London Coins stating that: "I have looked at the lot again and the coin is indeed Reverse B not Reverse A (Peck 1535 not 1534) We have inserted a saleroom notice to that effect."

At last, an auction company with some integrity!

Good work Cathrine!

They have always put a notice in when I have pointed something out previously. The serial offender when it comes to not issuing notices is W&W, with a couple of the London salerooms being in between.

Damn right. Peter Viola spotted a fair share of dodgy pieces, and he was probably the only person they took any notice of. Even then, they'd only say something when the lot came up so b*gger all use to postal commission bidders.

Paul is actually a decent guy and usually listens to what is said to him. He is also usually worth chatting to in those quiet spots when they're auctioning off share certificates etc.

London Coins. It's a direct quote from the lot description.

That 'we' refers to London Coins, I believe.

Cathrine put it in quotes, Dave. It's a quote directly out of London Coins catalogue, so "we" is London Coins.

Would you like to introduce yourself Cathrine? You seem to collect copper/bronze and obviously have a good deal of knowledge. Nice Joseph Moore in your avatar too.

I'm sorry to disappoint Debbie, but I'm masculine not feminine, and "Cathrine" is the name of my older daughter. I've specialized in collecting Victorian copper and bronze for the past six or seven years. I enjoy reading and participating in the forum's discussions. I live in the USA, the state of Maine. The avatar coin is a favorite in my collection; I got it from the Heritage Auction of January 2009, lot 21414.

You know that's really strange as I had this feeling that you weren't a girl - otherwise I would've said hello earlier! (not that I have anything against men you understand :P )

Glad you enjoy the forum. That silver Joseph Moore pattern is a real gem!

LOL - I thought exactly the same! I couldn't put my finger on exactly why, perhaps it was my male intuition :D
