1823 George IV MINT CONDITION UNCIRCULATED

Recommended Posts

Hi im not a coin collector but i was looking through my stepdads coin book that was stashed away. And i found a beautiful coin that looked brand new i mean newer than all the coins in the book and i have coins from 1999! But i didnt recognize the face on it so i looked at it further and found out it was from 1823 and it was made in Hannover,Germany. Well my stepdads family is from Hannover and he said it was uncirculated .Well everything on the coin is perfect right down to the strands of hair it looks like its been in the same plastic pouch since plastic was invented lol. In fact its inside of a pouch thats inside of a pouch. Well I looked up George IV coins and to make a long story short i have not found any coin of George IV with this amount of quality i mean u can see your reflection in the coin and its 181 years old. All I know is i cant find anyone who has one. Also in the encyclopedia it said that the coins minted of George IV from 1821-1823 have a neck thats pretty fat so it was only minted a couple years thats how mine looks. It has the inscription on the front-Georgius IV D.G . Britann & Hannov . Rex F.D circling around the edge of the coin.. The reverse reads- Brunsvicensis Et Luneburgensis Dux 1823 circling around the coin followed by a small 1000.(my stepdad said that means its the purest silver). Also on the reverse there is an inner halfcircle of letters that reads N.D Leipziger Fusse Feines Silber. In the middle of the reverse side is a big 2/3 or two over a line and a three. I guess that means 2 thirds of a pound or something. Anyways its in mint condition uncirculated straight from the mint(my stepdads ancestor must have worked at the mint because his family is from hannover and its been in the family for years) Also the Britann is minted upside down from right to left instead of the traditional left to right right side up. Also the face of George still has the original frosting and the coin has no black or tarnished spots it looks BRAND NEW! Can anyone please give me some additional info on the coin and maybe tell me how much you think it would be worth. Or if you could give me someone to contact to get it appraised besides a local coin shop I need someone whos an expert on european coins please thank you for reading ill post pictures in little while once i load them to my pc.

It's a Two Thirds of a Thaler (hence the 2/3) coin featuring a quite unflattering portrait of George IV of Great Britain and of course Hannover. It was minted in Clausthal, Germany and is in fact .993 fine silver (99.3%). it should weight 13.08g.

I'd like to see a picture of it, if it's as nice as you say it could be worth £150 or more, but don't get excited, the coin industry is a very fussy one and a good quality picture is very important so I can judge it on its merits.

I can't seem to get a good quality picture. Although i do have some pictures that will let u see how shiny it is because u can see the cameras reflection in the coin. You can also tell the letters are very well shaped. If u take my word for it im telling the man is not missing a strand of hair i have scrutinized it over and over i cant find any flaws. You can even see the side marks perfectly shaped not one of the coins side marks are missing or bent at all. I mean it looks like it came out of the mint. The first hundred something years my family kept it in wax . They waxed it to preserve it, it wasnt until the late 60s that the wax was gently removed and it was placed in a doubly laminated bag. Im afraid to take it out so i just leave it alone. I wish you can see it in person because the pictures dont do justice unless your a proffesional photagrapher and my camera is kind of cheap but ill post them in a new thread as soon as I upload my camera software onto my slow junky pc. Thanks for the info. Would you mind giving me the source that you acquired the info from? thank you

Where are you located?

You can post the picture within this thread, there's no need to start another one.

The information was mostly from refering to the 'Standard Catalog of World Coins 1801-1900' published in the USA by Krause.

I am British and make frequent UK trips, but I actually live in Germany, not all that far from Leipzig actually.
